Chapter 8: The Story He Created
I didn’t understand what Claire meant.
Not at first.
I wanted to believe she was lying.
I wanted to believe Ryan was the only monster in this story.
Because accepting that someone else helped him was harder.
“Blame someone else for what?”” I asked.
Claire looked down.
“For everything.””
I pushed the notebook toward her.
“Explain.””
She hesitated.
“Ryan had been building a story for months.””
“What story?””
“That you were unstable.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“He was telling people that?””
Claire nodded.
“He said you were too emotional. That you overreacted. That you created problems.””
I felt sick.
Because suddenly, every argument made sense.
Every time Ryan called me dramatic.
Every time he told me I was too sensitive.
It wasn’t random.
It was preparation.
“He wanted people to doubt me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at the notebook.
“Because he knew eventually someone would ask questions about Maya.””
I opened the notebook again.
Inside were pages of carefully written notes.
Not about Maya’s health.
About me.
*Mother refuses discipline.*
*Mother encourages dependency.*
*Mother exaggerates medical concerns.*
It wasn’t a diary.
It was evidence.
Against me.
“He was building a case.””
Claire nodded.
“He wanted custody.””
My stomach dropped.
“He was going to take Maya from me?””
Claire looked away.
“He thought he could.””
I closed the notebook.
I felt something inside me change.
For weeks, I had been afraid.
Afraid of losing my marriage.
Afraid of destroying my family.
Afraid of being wrong.
But now?
I was angry.
Not the kind of anger that made me scream.
The kind that made me quiet.
The kind that made me certain.
When I returned to Maya’s room, she was awake.
“Mom?””
I sat beside her.
“I found something.””
Her face immediately changed.
“About him?””
I nodded.
She looked scared.
“I don’t want to go home.””
I held her hand.
“You don’t have to.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Really?””
“Really.””
For the first time in days, her shoulders relaxed.
Then the doctor entered.
“Maya’s test results are back.””
I stood.
“Is she okay?””
He nodded.
“She’s stable.””
I breathed out.
“But we need to discuss something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He looked at Maya.
“We found evidence suggesting someone knew about her condition before she came here.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He handed me a report.
“There were previous medical notes.””
I looked at the page.
A clinic name.
A date.
Three months earlier.
I froze.
“Three months?””
The doctor nodded.
“Maya had been seen before.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Maya?””
She immediately started crying.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
I sat beside her.
“Who took you?””
She whispered:
“Ryan.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“He took me after school.””
My voice shook.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because he said you would make everything worse.””
I closed my eyes.
Three months.
He knew.
He knew something was wrong long before I did.
The doctor looked at the report.
“There’s more.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He turned the page.
“The doctor who examined Maya documented concerns.””
“What concerns?””
He read quietly.
“Patient reports fear of discussing symptoms at home.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why didn’t anyone contact me?””
The doctor looked at the file.
“Because the appointment was registered under Ryan’s contact information.””
I stared.
“He controlled the information.””
The doctor nodded.
Before anyone could say more, my phone rang.
A lawyer.
I didn’t know the number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A calm voice spoke.
“Mrs. Carter, my name is Jonathan Reed. I represent Ryan Carter.””
My heart sank.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then:
“We need to discuss your daughter.””
I stood.
“She is not going anywhere.””
His voice remained calm.
“That decision may not be yours to make.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Why?””
May you like
Because the next words changed everything.
“Because Ryan filed for emergency custody this morning.””
