Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Pain

I couldn’t move.

For several seconds, I just stared at my daughter.

The same daughter who had been apologizing for being hurt.

The same daughter who thought she was a problem.

“Maya,” I whispered, “what did he tell you?””

She looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not embarrassed.

Terrified.

The doctor stepped closer but kept his voice calm.

“Maya, you’re safe here.””

She looked at him.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Why?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because he said you wouldn’t believe me.””

My chest tightened.

“Who said that?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I already knew.

The doctor carefully placed the ultrasound image on the desk.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask some questions.””

I nodded.

“Anything.””

“Has Maya had any injuries recently?””

“No.””

“Any falls?””

“No.””

“Any accidents?””

I shook my head.

The doctor glanced at Maya.

“Sweetheart, can you tell me if someone hurt you?””

Maya immediately looked at the door.

That reaction said more than words.

I felt my hands go numb.

“Maya.””

She squeezed her eyes shut.

Then she whispered:

“He told me not to tell.””

The air left my lungs.

The doctor pulled a chair closer.

“Who told you not to tell?””

Maya’s tears fell.

“Ryan.””

Hearing his name from her mouth felt different.

Not like my husband.

Not like the man who used to carry her on his shoulders when she was little.

It sounded like the name of someone I didn’t know.

I grabbed my phone.

There were twelve missed calls.

One voicemail.

I pressed play.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

“Where are you? This is getting ridiculous. Bring her home. We don’t need strangers putting ideas in her head.””

The doctor looked at me.

He didn’t say anything.

He didn’t have to.

The message was enough.

Maya covered her ears.

“Make it stop.””

I immediately ended it.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“No, Mom.””

Her voice cracked.

“I should have told you.””

I held her hand.

“You should never have been scared to tell me.””

She cried harder.

The doctor stepped outside for a moment.

I stayed beside her.

The girl who once ran through the house singing was now curled beneath a hospital blanket, afraid of the person who was supposed to protect her.

“Maya,” I said softly, “tell me everything.””

She stared at the ceiling.

“For weeks, he said my stomach hurt because I wanted attention.””

I closed my eyes.

“He said if I kept complaining, you would get tired of me.””

My heart shattered.

“What else?””

She swallowed.

“He said you loved him more because he was the one who paid for everything.””

I felt anger rising through me.

But I forced myself to stay calm.

Because Maya needed safety.

Not rage.

“Did he ever hurt you?””

She went silent.

That silence terrified me.

“Maya?””

She slowly nodded.

Only once.

The doctor returned at that exact moment.

He looked between us.

“Is there something you need to tell me?””

Maya grabbed my hand.

Her fingers tightened.

Then she whispered:

“He said nobody would believe a kid.””

The doctor’s expression changed.

Not surprise.

Concern.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something important.””

“What?””

“Has Ryan ever been alone with Maya for long periods of time?””

I opened my mouth.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly, every memory I had ignored came rushing back.

The way Maya became quiet when Ryan entered a room.

The way she stopped asking him for help.

The way she always looked at me before answering him.

My phone vibrated again.

Ryan.

This time, I answered.

“Where are you?”” he demanded immediately.

I said nothing.

“Are you listening? You need to bring her home.””

My voice was shaking.

“Why are you afraid of her talking to the doctor?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Ryan said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because you don’t understand what she’s capable of.””

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

The doctor reached over and took the phone from my hand.

“Mr. Carter,” he said, “this is Dr. Bennett. We need you to remain away from this room until further notice.””

Ryan’s voice changed.

“What did she tell you?””

The doctor looked at me.

Then at Maya.

And I knew.

Whatever happened next would destroy the life I thought I had.

Because when the doctor ended the call, he quietly locked the door again.

May you like

And this time, he wasn’t protecting Maya from the outside.

He was protecting us from Ryan.
