Chapter 3: The Man Behind The Mask

I spent years believing Ryan was the calm one.

The reasonable one.

The person who balanced my emotions when I worried too much.

That was the story I told myself.

Until I watched my daughter flinch at the sound of his voice.

The doctor sat across from us while a nurse checked Maya’s vitals.

“Maya,” he said gently, “I need you to tell us exactly what happened.””

She looked at me.

I nodded.

“You’re safe.””

Her fingers twisted into the hospital blanket.

“Ryan got angry when Mom made the first appointment.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“He said we couldn’t waste money.””

The doctor wrote something down.

“What happened after that?””

Maya swallowed.

“He came into my room at night.””

My entire body went still.

“When?””

“After you went to sleep.””

I could barely breathe.

“What did he say?””

Maya’s voice became smaller.

“He told me I was embarrassing him.””

The doctor leaned forward.

“Did he threaten you?””

She nodded.

“He said if I told you, he would make sure you believed I was lying.””

I covered my mouth.

The room blurred.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to run home.

I wanted to confront Ryan.

But my daughter needed me right there.

Not somewhere else.

Not chasing answers.

Right there.

The doctor looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand something. The injury we’re seeing is serious.””

My voice barely came out.

“Can you fix it?””

“We’re going to do everything we can.””

The words were careful.

Too careful.

I knew what that meant.

Maya reached for my hand.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For ruining everything.””

Those words hurt more than anything.

“You didn’t ruin anything.””

She cried quietly.

“I thought if I stopped talking about it, he would stop being mad.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“How long were you carrying this alone?””

She looked away.

“Three weeks.””

Three weeks.

My daughter had been suffering beside me.

And I had trusted the wrong person.

A nurse entered with paperwork.

“Mrs. Carter, we need a few signatures.””

I signed without reading.

My hands were shaking.

Then my phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Ryan.

It was a message.

A photo.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

It was from Ryan.

A picture of our house.

The front door.

The message underneath was simple.

*Come home. We need to talk.*

The doctor noticed my face.

“Is everything okay?””

I locked the phone.

“No.””

The doctor studied me.

“Did he come here?””

“Not yet.””

“Do you know where he is?””

I looked at the message again.

Then something clicked.

Ryan didn’t sound worried.

He didn’t ask if Maya was okay.

He didn’t ask what the doctors found.

He was angry.

Like he was losing control.

The doctor stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, there’s something else you should know.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he handed me another image from the ultrasound.

“This was not caused by one recent incident.””

My heart sank.

“What are you saying?””

He lowered his voice.

“There are signs that suggest repeated trauma.””

I stared at the picture.

Repeated.

That word echoed.

Maya started crying.

“Mom…”

I turned toward her.

“I’m here.””

She squeezed my hand.

“Don’t leave me alone with him.””

The sentence broke something inside me.

Because she wasn’t asking me to protect her from a stranger.

She was asking me to protect her from my husband.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

The nurse looked through the window.

Her face changed.

“Mrs. Carter…”

My heartbeat stopped.

“Who is it?””

She looked back at me.

“Your husband.””

Maya immediately grabbed my arm.

“No.””

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

The doctor stepped in front of Maya.

“Mr. Carter cannot enter this room.””

Ryan’s voice came from the other side.

“Open the door.””

Nobody moved.

Then his voice became sharper.

“I know she’s in there.””

Maya buried her face against me.

May you like

And then Ryan said the one sentence that made the doctor reach for the emergency button.

“She always believed you over me. I guess I should have handled that problem sooner.””
