Chapter 7: The List In His Handwriting

I stared at the paper until the words stopped looking real.

*Maya’s punishment schedule.*

Those four words felt impossible.

A father didn’t write things like that.

A father didn’t keep records of his own child’s suffering.

A father didn’t mark dates like appointments.

But there it was.

Ryan’s handwriting.

His careful, organized handwriting that I had seen on birthday cards, grocery lists, and mortgage documents.

The same handwriting that now sat on a piece of paper describing my daughter’s pain.

“Maya,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart broke.

“No.””

She flinched slightly.

“No, sweetheart. You don’t apologize.””

She looked down.

“I thought if I showed you, you would hate him.””

I swallowed hard.

“I do hate what he did.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But he’s still my dad.””

That sentence almost destroyed me.

Because even after everything, she was still a child trying to understand how someone could hurt her and still be someone she loved.

The officer carefully took the paper.

“Mrs. Carter, where did you get this?””

Maya pointed to the drawer beside her bed.

“He dropped it once.””

The officer looked at her.

“When?””

She hesitated.

“After I got sick.””

My stomach tightened.

“He wrote it after you started having pain?””

Maya nodded.

“He said it was to keep track of my lies.””

The officer’s jaw tightened.

“Did he ever show this to you?””

“No.””

“Did he threaten you?””

Maya looked at me.

Then whispered:

“He said if I told anyone, Mom would leave us both.””

I closed my eyes.

The manipulation was worse than I imagined.

He didn’t just hurt her.

He made her believe she was protecting me by staying silent.

The officer placed the paper into an evidence bag.

“We need to understand everything that happened.””

I looked at him.

“What does this mean for Ryan?””

He paused.

“We are still investigating.””

That answer wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

For weeks, I had lived inside uncertainty.

I had questioned myself.

Questioned Maya.

Questioned whether I was overreacting.

But now there was no more pretending.

A nurse entered.

“Maya needs to rest.””

I nodded.

Before I left the room, Maya grabbed my hand.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Are you mad at me?””

I froze.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

“Because I knew something was wrong and I didn’t tell you.””

I sat beside her.

“Maya, look at me.””

She did.

“You were twelve years old.””

Her lips trembled.

“You were scared.””

She nodded.

“And someone who should have protected you made you feel like you couldn’t speak.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I tried to be brave.””

I held her hand.

“You were brave.””

That night, I stayed beside her.

I didn’t sleep.

Every time she moved, I woke up.

Every time my phone buzzed, my heart raced.

At 3:14 in the morning, another message came.

Not from Ryan.

From Claire.

I stared at the name.

How did she get my number?

The message was short.

*You don’t know the whole story. Meet me before you destroy your family.*

I almost deleted it.

Almost.

But something stopped me.

Because Claire knew about Maya.

And if she had been involved, I needed answers.

The next morning, I met her in the hospital cafeteria.

She arrived wearing expensive clothes and a confident expression.

The kind of expression someone wears when they think they still have control.

“You shouldn’t have come,” she said.

I stared at her.

“Then why did you ask me to?””

She looked around.

“Because you need to understand Ryan isn’t the only person who made mistakes.””

My anger rose.

“Mistakes?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Maya was difficult.””

I stood up.

“Be careful.””

She immediately looked away.

“I’m not saying what happened was right.””

“Then what are you saying?””

She took a deep breath.

“I’m saying Ryan was scared.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her bag.

And placed something on the table.

A small black notebook.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

Claire looked at me.

“From Ryan.””

I opened it.

The first page had Maya’s name.

The second page had dates.

The third page had something that made my hands shake.

A photograph.

Of Maya asleep.

Taken inside our house.

I looked up.

“Why do you have this?””

Claire’s face changed.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

“Because Ryan told me if anything happened, I was supposed to keep it safe.””

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

She lowered her voice.

“He knew someone would eventually find out.””

My blood ran cold.

“What was he planning?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She only whispered:

“He wasn’t trying to hide what he did to Maya.””

May you like

She looked at the notebook.

“He was preparing to blame someone else.””
