Chapter 13: The Girl Before Maya

I felt the room become completely silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence where every sound disappears because one sentence has changed everything.

“I wasn’t the first person he did this to.””

Maya’s words stayed between us.

I sat beside her slowly.

“What do you mean?””

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You can tell me anything.””

She shook her head.

“No. Because you loved him.””

That hurt more than I expected.

Because she wasn’t saying it with anger.

She was saying it like a child who had been carrying a secret too heavy for her.

“Maya, I need you to tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“When I was at the clinic with Ryan, I heard him talking to someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked down.

“But she was crying.””

My heart tightened.

“Crying?””

Maya nodded.

“She said she was scared.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did Ryan say?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“He said the same thing he said to me.””

My voice became quiet.

“What?””

“He said nobody would believe her.””

I immediately thought of the hidden room.

The files.

The photographs.

The plan.

“How long ago was this?””

Maya looked at me.

“Before me.””

Before Maya.

The words echoed.

I grabbed my phone and called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“Did something happen?””

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“Maya knows about another victim.””

The silence on the other end told me Rachel understood the seriousness.

“Tell me everything.””

After Maya explained, Rachel told us she would contact investigators.

But there was something else.

“Mrs. Carter, we found another folder in the basement.””

My stomach tightened.

“What folder?””

“One labeled with a name.””

“What name?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Emily.””

I looked at Maya.

She went pale.

“I know that name.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

Maya whispered:

“Because Ryan told me never to say it.””

The room felt colder.

“Who is Emily?””

Maya looked at the floor.

“She used to live here.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Before me.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Ryan had a previous life he never told me about.

A previous child?

A previous victim?

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Maya wiped her tears.

“Because he said if I talked about things from before, you would leave.””

I stood up.

Not because I was angry at Maya.

Because I finally understood.

Ryan had been using fear like a cage.

Rachel arrived less than an hour later with investigators.

The basement folder was opened.

Inside were medical records.

School reports.

Photographs.

And one document that made everyone stop.

A custody agreement.

Between Ryan and another woman.

The investigator looked at me.

“Do you know an Emily Carter?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at the document.

“She was listed as Ryan’s daughter.””

I felt sick.

“Was?””

He looked down.

“She disappeared from his care seven years ago.””

My heart raced.

“Disappeared?””

The investigator nodded.

“The records were sealed.””

Rachel looked at the documents.

“Why?””

The investigator didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because there was a court investigation.””

I felt dizzy.

“What happened?””

He opened another file.

The answer was written there.

*Child reported repeated fear of father.*

*Child removed from home temporarily.*

*Father denied allegations.*

I covered my mouth.

Ryan had done this before.

Not once.

Not accidentally.

Before.

The next day, the investigators found Emily.

Alive.

Living in another state.

When Rachel called me, I could barely speak.

“She agreed to talk.””

“About Ryan?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Maya.

My daughter was asleep beside me.

For the first time in days, she looked peaceful.

“What did Emily say?””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“She said Ryan always followed the same pattern.””

My heart sank.

“What pattern?””

A pause.

“He made people question the child before they questioned him.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what happened to Maya.

And exactly what almost happened to me.

Then Rachel said something else.

“Emily wants to meet Maya.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Why?””

Rachel answered quietly:

“Because she says Maya needs to hear something only she can explain.””

“What?””

Rachel took a breath.

“She knows why Ryan kept the basement.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

Rachel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Because the basement wasn’t where he stored evidence.””

May you like

A pause.

“It was where he stored his control.””
