Chapter 6: The Woman in the Hospital Hallway
For two hours, I sat at my mother’s kitchen table without moving.
The letter remained in front of me.
Emily’s handwriting.
Emily’s warning.
Emily’s final attempt to protect Lily.
And one question that kept repeating in my mind.
How did Vanessa know Emily?
I called her.
She answered on the third ring.
“Daniel?””
Her voice sounded tired.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At home.””
“I need you to come here.””
Another pause.
“Why?””
I looked at the letter.
“Because we need to talk about the hospital.””
The silence on the other end lasted too long.
“Daniel…”
“Come here.””
She hung up.
Forty minutes later, Vanessa walked into my mother’s house.
She looked different.
Smaller.
Like she knew the truth was finally catching up with her.
My mother stayed in the room.
So did Sarah.
Vanessa noticed.
“You brought an audience?””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I brought witnesses.””
Her face tightened.
“That’s unfair.””
“Is it?””
I placed the letter on the table.
Her eyes immediately went to it.
She froze.
“You found it.””
Not a question.
A statement.
I felt my stomach twist.
“You knew it existed.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I knew Emily wrote something.””
“How?””
Silence.
“How did you know?””
She sat down slowly.
“I met her.””
My mother gasped.
Sarah looked at me.
I didn’t move.
“When?””
Vanessa rubbed her hands together.
“At the hospital.””
The room went quiet.
“You were there before she died?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I wanted to understand.””
“Understand what?””
Her eyes lifted.
“Your family.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
“No, Vanessa. It doesn’t.””
My voice rose.
“You were a stranger. Why were you studying my wife’s family?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””
“Then why did Emily write about you?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s a lie.””
She stood suddenly.
“You think I wanted her life?””
I didn’t answer.
“You think I wanted to replace a woman who was dying?””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised even me.
Vanessa looked wounded.
But then something changed.
Her sadness disappeared.
And anger replaced it.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Sarah and my mother.
Then back at me.
“I was at the hospital because Emily asked me to come.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“She knew me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She did.””
“Emily never mentioned you.””
“She didn’t mention a lot of things.””
I stepped closer.
“Who are you?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, she answered without hesitation.
“I was Emily’s friend.””
The room went silent.
A thousand thoughts hit me at once.
Friend?
Then why hide it?
Why take the necklace?
Why search Lily’s room?
Why lie?
I stared at her.
“If you were Emily’s friend…”
I pointed at the letter.
“Why was she afraid of you?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
And then she said something I never expected.
“Because Emily thought I was protecting her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My entire body went cold.
Because I recognized it.
The paper.
The handwriting.
The same handwriting as Emily’s letter.
“I found this after she died,” Vanessa whispered.
I stared at the envelope.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Emily told me not to.””
My heart pounded.
“What did it say?””
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the envelope.
She looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Emily wasn’t warning you about me.””
The room became completely still.
“She was warning you about someone else.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
Vanessa slowly placed the envelope on the table.
And when I saw the name written on the front, I forgot how to breathe.
Because it wasn’t my name.
It wasn’t Lily’s name.
May you like
It was my mother’s.
