Chapter 12: The Father Who Never Left
I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t speak.
I couldn’t move.
The man on Lily’s screen was impossible.
But there he was.
Standing in my mother’s living room.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
My father.
“Daddy?””
Lily’s voice pulled me back.
I grabbed the phone.
“Sweetheart, go to your room.””
The man in the background looked toward the camera.
His expression changed.
“Daniel?””
Hearing my name from his mouth broke something inside me.
I ended the call.
Immediately.
Then I called my mother.
She answered after one ring.
“Daniel.””
“Is he there?””
Silence.
“Mom.””
Her voice shook.
“Yes.””
My legs felt weak.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why is my father alive?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Because he needed to disappear.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was almost physical.
“From me?””
“No.””
“Then from who?””
My mother whispered:
“Everyone.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at me.
She knew.
“How long?””
My mother was crying now.
“Seven years.””
Seven years.
My father had been alive for seven years.
Seven years of birthdays.
Seven years of holidays.
Seven years of watching me believe he was gone.
“You let me bury him.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always say that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I felt anger rising.
“No choice?””
My voice broke.
“You let me mourn him.””
“I mourned him too.””
“Then why hide him?””
My mother said nothing.
I knew she was crying.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“I’m coming there.””
“Daniel, wait.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because he’s not the same man you remember.””
The words stopped me.
“What does that mean?””
A pause.
Then:
“He knows what happened to Emily.””
My heart froze.
“What?””
My mother whispered:
“He knows who hurt her.””
The call ended.
I stood there.
Trying to process impossible truths.
Vanessa slowly stood.
“You need to talk to him.””
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“You knew my father was alive.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Since before we married.””
That answer hurt.
Almost as much as everything else.
“You lied to me too.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“I don’t know who I can trust.””
She whispered:
“Neither did Emily.””
That sentence stopped me.
Because it was true.
Emily had been surrounded by secrets too.
I drove to my mother’s house.
This time, I didn’t hesitate.
My father was waiting in the living room.
When I walked in, he stood.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then he said:
“Daniel.””
I looked at the man who raised me.
The man I buried.
The man who disappeared.
“Why?””
One word.
That was all I had.
His face broke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
Everyone said that.
Everyone used those words.
“You don’t get to say that.””
He looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“You abandoned your son.””
“I was trying to stop something worse.””
“What?””
He looked toward Lily’s room.
Then back at me.
“Your father’s company wasn’t the only thing being controlled.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He stepped closer.
“There was someone inside our family who was feeding information to the people threatening us.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
And his answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“It was someone you trusted.””
I swallowed.
“Who?””
My father’s eyes moved toward the hallway.
Toward the room where my mother stood.
Then he whispered:
“Your mother wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One photo.
I opened it.
It was Emily.
Alive.
Standing outside the hospital.
And beside her was the person she had been afraid of.
The person who had been helping her.
The person everyone had missed.
I looked closer.
May you like
And my entire body went cold.
Because the person standing beside Emily was me.
