Chapter 14: The Truth Emily Protected

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

The name sat there.

My name.

Written in Emily’s handwriting.

A warning.

A confession.

Or something worse.

My father was the first to move.

He picked up the device.

“Give me that.””

I pulled it away.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone keeps telling me what to do.””

My voice shook.

“My whole life, everyone has been making decisions for me.””

My mother started crying.

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

I looked around the room.

“My wife died.””

My voice broke.

“My daughter lost her mother.””

I pointed at the letters.

“And everyone here knew something.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What does my name mean?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“Emily wrote it.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

That answer made me angry.

“You can’t or you won’t?””

Before she answered, my father spoke.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“The recording was a trap.””

“What?””

“Someone wanted you to believe you were responsible.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because your memory was damaged.””

My father took a breath.

“After the crash, you started asking questions.””

“What questions?””

“About the brakes.””

My stomach dropped.

“I investigated?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“You found evidence.””

“Against who?””

My father looked at my mother.

Then away.

“Against someone close.””

I was tired of those words.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone hiding.

“Who?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

Again.

I looked at my mother.

She looked devastated.

“Dad.””

“I said evidence.””

He looked at me.

“Not guilt.””

“What’s the difference?””

“The evidence was planted.””

I froze.

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Emily knew.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She knew someone was trying to frame your mother.””

I stared at her.

“Then why write my name?””

Vanessa looked at the recording.

“Because she wasn’t writing your name.””

“What?””

She pointed.

“Look closer.””

I picked up the device.

The handwriting.

The spacing.

The ink.

I looked again.

And suddenly I saw it.

The name wasn’t Daniel.

It was:

D.

A.

N.

The letters were unfinished.

A sentence cut off.

My heart stopped.

“She was interrupted.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Emily wasn’t accusing me.

She was writing something that began with my name.

Daniel…

I need you to know…

I looked at the recording again.

The truth was hidden in the interruption.

My phone suddenly rang.

Sarah.

I answered.

“Sarah?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

“A storage box.””

I frowned.

“Where?””

“In your father’s old office.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

Sarah continued.

“Your father kept records there.””

“What kind?””

“A video.””

I stood still.

“Send it.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because someone else is watching it.””

My stomach tightened.

“Sarah, leave.””

“I can’t.””

“What do you mean?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because I’m not alone.””

The call ended.

I immediately called back.

No answer.

My father grabbed his coat.

“We need to go.””

We rushed there.

The old office building was empty.

Too empty.

The door was open.

Sarah’s car was outside.

But Sarah wasn’t.

Inside the office, everything was destroyed.

Drawers ripped open.

Papers everywhere.

Then I saw it.

A laptop sitting on the desk.

Still on.

A video file was open.

The title:

Emily’s Final Recording.

I pressed play.

Emily appeared on the screen.

She looked weaker than I had ever seen her.

But her eyes were clear.

“Daniel.””

I stopped breathing.

“If you are watching this, then they found the evidence.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to understand something.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You were never the danger.””

The video glitched.

Then came the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

“The person who destroyed our family is the person you have spent your entire life trying to forgive.””

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

A name.

Not my mother.

Not Vanessa.

Not my father.

Someone else.

Someone I had never suspected.

May you like

Someone who had been there through every tragedy.

My sister Sarah.
