Chapter 4: The Ring in Her Hand

The first thing I noticed was not the ring.

It was Vanessa’s face.

For the last two years, I had known every version of her expression.

The playful smile she wore when we first met.

The nervous laugh when she asked me to marry her.

The tears when she promised Lily she would always protect her.

But I had never seen this.

Pure panic.

She stood at the bottom of the stairs with Emily’s wedding ring hidden in her palm.

My late wife’s ring.

The ring I buried with Emily in every way except physically.

Because after she died, I couldn’t bring myself to let go of it.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked again.

My voice sounded different.

Even to me.

Vanessa slowly closed her fingers around the ring.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

My daughter was standing behind the kitchen doorway, watching everything.

And suddenly Vanessa noticed.

“Lily, go to your room.””

“No,” I said immediately.

Vanessa looked at me.

“She doesn’t need to see this.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“She already saw enough last night.””

“Daniel, please.””

“Where did you get Emily’s ring?””

She looked down.

“I found it.””

The answer hit me like a slap.

“Found it where?””

She didn’t respond.

“Where, Vanessa?””

Her silence told me everything.

I reached out my hand.

“Give it to me.””

She held it tighter.

“Why?””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

“You’re asking me why I want my dead wife’s wedding ring?””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“Then give it back.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed the last bit of trust I had left.

Lily began crying softly.

“Daddy…”

I turned immediately.

“Sweetheart?””

“Is Mommy’s ring gone forever?””

That question broke my heart.

Because it wasn’t about the ring.

It was about the fear behind it.

The fear that everything her mother left behind could disappear.

I knelt beside her.

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“It’s not.””

Vanessa finally opened her hand.

The ring fell into my palm.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I remembered Emily wearing it while cooking dinner.

Wearing it while holding Lily as a baby.

Wearing it when we sat together in the hospital room pretending everything would be okay.

I closed my fingers around it.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was curious.””

“Curious?””

“Yes.””

“You went into my daughter’s room, opened Emily’s box, took her necklace, took her ring, and read a letter because you were curious?””

Her expression changed.

“You’re making it sound worse than it was.””

“How could I make it sound worse?””

She stepped closer.

“I was trying to understand you.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She swallowed.

“You never talk about Emily.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re wearing her necklace.””

“I wanted to know why.””

“Why what?””

“Why after all this time, she still controls this house.””

The words hung in the air.

I felt something inside me go quiet.

“She doesn’t control this house.””

“Yes, she does.””

“No.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“She’s part of this family.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t see it, Daniel. You look at Lily and you see Emily.””

My daughter lowered her eyes.

That was when I knew Vanessa had crossed a line.

“You never say that again.””

She looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because Lily is not a reminder of someone you’re competing with.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I’m not competing with a dead woman.””

“Then stop acting like you are.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Vanessa looked hurt.

But I couldn’t tell if she was hurt by my words or by being caught.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Sarah.

I opened it.

It was another photo.

This time, it was the envelope.

Emily’s envelope.

Sarah had found it hidden behind the old wooden box.

The front was exactly as Vanessa described.

For Daniel. After I’m gone.

But there was something else.

A second line written underneath.

Something I had never seen before.

My hands started shaking.

Because Emily’s handwriting was unmistakable.

And the sentence underneath made my entire world stop.

Do not trust the woman who comes after me.

I looked up at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

She knew.

Somehow, she knew exactly what I had just read.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

I slowly put my phone down.

“How long have you known about this letter?””

Her face went pale.

And that was when I realized…

May you like

Vanessa hadn’t been searching for the letter because she wanted to find Emily’s secret.

She had been searching for it because she already knew what it said.
