Chapter 11: Emily’s Last Investigation

I met Vanessa at a small coffee shop across town.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I didn’t know who else to trust.

That realization hurt.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who held my hand through my darkest days.

Was now someone I questioned.

Vanessa arrived ten minutes late.

She looked like she hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

She sat across from me.

“You know.””

It wasn’t a question.

I placed my phone on the table.

“Show me what you found.””

She hesitated.

Then she pulled out a folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Photos.

Notes.

Emily’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I looked through them.

“Where did you get these?””

“Emily gave them to me.””

“When?””

“Two days before she died.””

I looked up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because she made me promise.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed someone was watching you.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“She didn’t know.””

I looked down at the papers.

There were dates.

Bank transfers.

Names.

One name appeared again and again.

Margaret.

My mother.

I felt sick.

“No.””

Vanessa watched me carefully.

“I know what it looks like.””

“It looks like my mother betrayed my father.””

“Yes.””

I looked up sharply.

“You’re agreeing?””

“No.””

She leaned forward.

“I’m saying Emily thought the same thing at first.””

That caught me.

“She suspected my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would Emily write that someone helping her was someone she was afraid to lose?””

Vanessa became quiet.

I understood.

“She meant my mother.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother was helping her investigate.””

I stared at the documents.

My mind struggled to keep up.

“So my mother knew.””

“Yes.””

“But she wasn’t the enemy.””

“No.””

“Then why hide everything?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because she found out something worse.””

“What?””

Vanessa slid another paper across the table.

It was a hospital record.

I read the name.

Emily Carter.

The date.

The day before she died.

Then I saw the visitor information.

A name.

My heart stopped.

“Who is this?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“That’s what Emily was trying to find out.””

The name on the paper was unfamiliar.

But the signature beneath it wasn’t.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

It was my father’s.

Impossible.

My father had been dead before Emily became sick.

“How?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your father wasn’t dead when Emily started investigating.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He was alive.””

The world tilted.

“No.””

“I saw him.””

“Where?””

“At the hospital.””

I stood up.

People around us started looking.

I didn’t care.

“You’re telling me my dead father visited Emily?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was sick.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No. It’s the truth.””

I sat back down.

My hands went cold.

“What did Emily know?””

Vanessa looked at the papers.

“She discovered your father faked part of his death.””

“Why?””

“Because he was hiding.””

“From who?””

She looked at me.

“From the people he worked with.””

I swallowed.

“And my mother?””

“Your mother knew.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“Because your father made her promise.””

I closed my eyes.

My entire life was built on things people decided not to tell me.

Then my phone rang.

A video call.

Lily.

I answered immediately.

Her face appeared.

“Daddy?””

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Her eyes were red.

“What’s wrong?””

She looked behind her.

Then whispered:

“Daddy…”

“What?””

“Someone came to Grandma’s house.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The phone moved.

I saw the living room.

My mother standing near the door.

And behind her…

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

A face I had seen in old photographs.

A face I thought belonged only to the past.

My father.

May you like

Alive.

Standing inside my mother’s house.
