Chapter 8: The Child Everyone Claimed
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Then my father laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire shook her head.
“I thought so too.””
My mother looked confused.
“Claire, what are you saying?””
Claire looked at me.
“I’m saying the story you were given about Daniel’s birth was incomplete.””
I felt dizzy.
“My whole life has been incomplete.””
The words came out quietly.
Everyone heard them.
My father sat down.
He looked older than he had five minutes earlier.
“Rebecca,” he said into the phone, “is this true?””
Her voice was weak.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
A pause.
“But I know someone changed the records.””
My father looked up.
“What records?””
“Hospital records.””
My stomach dropped.
My birth certificate.
My adoption papers.
Everything I thought was proof.
Everything I trusted.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Rebecca answered.
“It means someone wanted your identity hidden.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire’s mother, Margaret, spoke.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
“I know who changed them.””
My father stood.
“Margaret.””
She wiped her face.
“I was young. I was scared. I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
My father’s voice shook.
“You stole thirty years from people.””
Margaret looked at me.
“I never wanted you hurt.””
I stared at her.
“You knew about me before today?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Since you were born.””
The room felt like it tilted.
Claire covered her mouth.
“Mom…”
Margaret looked at her daughter.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me from what?””
Margaret looked at me.
“From the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“No more secrets.””
My voice was shaking.
“No more protecting me.””
Nobody spoke.
I pointed at the documents on the table.
“I want everything.””
My father opened the envelope.
Ethan placed his papers beside it.
Margaret slowly reached into her purse.
Then she pulled out a small folder.
“I kept these.””
My mother stared.
“What are they?””
“Copies.””
Margaret’s hands trembled.
“Original documents from the hospital.””
My heart raced.
She handed them to me.
The first page was old.
Yellowed.
Faded.
But my name was there.
Daniel Carter.
I read further.
Then I stopped.
Because the mother listed on the document wasn’t Rebecca.
It wasn’t my mother.
It was someone else.
Someone whose name I had heard before.
Someone who was standing in that room.
I looked up slowly.
“No.””
My father took the paper from me.
His face changed.
“What?””
I couldn’t speak.
Ethan grabbed the page.
Then he went silent.
Claire looked between us.
“Who?””
I handed her the paper.
She read it.
And her eyes widened.
Because the woman listed as my biological mother was:
Margaret.
Claire’s mother.
The room exploded.
“No,” Claire whispered.
Margaret immediately shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
“You said you knew since I was born.””
“I knew about the records.””
“Not this?””
She started crying.
“I was told the baby died.””
I stared at her.
The woman who had hugged me at family dinners.
The woman who had called me “son” as a joke.
The woman whose daughter I was supposed to marry.
“You’re saying you gave birth to me?””
Margaret looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
That answer terrified me.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“Because I never saw the baby.””
Nobody moved.
“My family told me my child was gone.””
My father looked confused.
“Then why was your name on the record?””
Margaret whispered:
“Because someone changed it.””
The phone suddenly crackled.
Rebecca spoke.
“I remember now.””
Everyone turned toward the phone.
Her voice was shaking.
“The night Daniel was born…”
A pause.
“I wasn’t the only woman in that hospital room.””
My heart pounded.
“Who else was there?””
Rebecca answered:
“Your grandfather.””
My father froze.
“What?””
Rebecca continued.
“He made a deal.””
The room became silent.
“What kind of deal?””
Her voice dropped.
May you like
“A deal that would make sure nobody ever discovered who Daniel really belonged to.””
Then the call disconnected.
