Chapter 7: The Lie Standing Beside Me

The message remained glowing on my phone.

Ten words.

That was all it took to make my entire wedding feel like a trap.

*Because the person standing beside you is still lying.*

I slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone was staring at me.

Claire noticed first.

“What is it?””

I looked at her.

And for the first time, I wondered if I had ever truly known her.

“Another message.””

Her face changed.

Not dramatically.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But I noticed.

Because for three years, I had studied every expression on her face.

I knew the way her eyes softened when she was happy.

I knew the way she bit her lip when she was nervous.

And I knew the way she became completely still when she was hiding something.

“Who sent it?”” my father asked.

I didn’t answer.

I just showed him the screen.

He read it.

Then he looked around the room.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

The guests immediately started whispering.

Claire’s father stood.

“This is a family matter.””

My father turned toward him.

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“This stopped being a family matter when someone threatened my wife.””

Nobody argued after that.

One by one, guests began leaving the ballroom.

The wedding I had spent a year planning disappeared in less than five minutes.

The flowers remained.

The music continued playing softly.

The cake sat untouched.

Everything looked perfect.

Except my life.

When the room finally emptied, only a few people remained.

My parents.

Ethan.

Claire.

Claire’s parents.

And me.

I looked at Claire.

“Tell me something.””

She swallowed.

“What?””

“Were you ever going to tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked down.

“No.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

I stepped back.

“You weren’t?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She didn’t respond.

“When we were married? After we had children? After I spent my entire life believing something that wasn’t true?””

“Daniel, I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone was scared except me. I was the only person who didn’t know anything.””

Claire wiped her tears.

“I found out two weeks before the wedding.””

My father immediately looked at her.

“Two weeks?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You knew enough to keep my mother away.””

Her face tightened.

“I didn’t send that message.””

“But you knew about it.””

Silence.

That was enough.

I stared at her.

“You knew someone was threatening my mother.””

Claire looked away.

“I suspected.””

My chest tightened.

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let her stay away?””

Her tears fell.

“I thought if she didn’t come, everything would stay under control.””

“Control?””

I repeated the word.

“You call this control?””

Claire covered her face.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rebecca’s voice came through my father’s phone.

“She’s protecting herself.””

Everyone turned.

The call was still connected.

Rebecca spoke quietly.

“Daniel, there are things you need to know about Claire.””

Claire immediately stepped toward the phone.

“No.””

Her voice was almost a whisper.

“Please don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She looked broken.

“Because once you know everything, there’s no going back.””

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Did you love me?””

The question seemed to destroy her.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you build our entire relationship on secrets?””

She didn’t answer.

My father picked up the phone.

“Rebecca, tell him.””

A long pause.

Then Rebecca said:

“Claire contacted me before the wedding.””

Everyone froze.

I turned toward Claire.

“What?””

Claire’s face went pale.

“No.””

Rebecca continued.

“She found me.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“You knew where she was?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was trying to understand.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You were investigating.””

She looked away.

Rebecca sighed.

“Claire wanted to know if I was really Daniel’s mother.””

My hands shook.

“And?””

“She found out.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Claire.

“You knew.””

She cried.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

The same time my mother disappeared from the wedding plans.

The same time Claire started saying my mother needed space.

The same time everything changed.

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire whispered:

“Because I found something else.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked at my mother.

Then my father.

Then me.

“The night you were born…”

She stopped.

My heart pounded.

“What about it?””

Claire’s voice trembled.

“Your mother wasn’t the only person who was lied to.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Daniel…”

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father was lied to too.””

My father stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire looked terrified.

“Robert…”

She whispered his name.

“Your son wasn’t taken from Rebecca.””

May you like

Nobody moved.

“He was taken from someone else.””
