Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Message

I stared at the photograph until the image blurred.

The woman outside my mother’s house.

The timestamp.

The strange angle.

The fear on my mother’s face.

None of it made sense.

“Who took this?”” I asked.

My father didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at my mother.

She closed her eyes.

“I did.””

My head snapped toward her.

“You?””

She nodded slowly.

“I wanted proof.””

The ballroom seemed to shrink around me.

My mother wiped her cheeks.

“When I received the message, I thought it was a cruel joke. I thought someone was trying to scare me away.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it mentioned details only someone close to you would know.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

That single movement felt louder than a confession.

Claire’s father stood from his chair.

“This has gone too far.””

My father turned.

“No. It hasn’t gone far enough.””

Claire’s father shook his head.

“You’re humiliating your daughter in front of everyone.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Your daughter humiliated herself when she tried to keep a mother away from her son’s wedding.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Her voice cracked.

Everyone looked at her.

For a second, I saw the person I used to know.

The woman who laughed loudly at bad movies.

The woman who danced barefoot in our kitchen.

The woman who promised me we would grow old together.

Then I remembered my mother standing at those doors covered in mud.

I remembered the fear.

“Claire,” I said quietly, “tell me the truth.””

She looked at me.

“I am telling you the truth.””

“Were you at my mother’s house?””

Her silence lasted only two seconds.

But it was enough.

The room reacted immediately.

Whispers.

Shocked faces.

My chest felt hollow.

“Claire.””

She shook her head.

“It’s not what you think.””

“That’s what everyone says when it’s exactly what I think.””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I didn’t move.

“Why did you tell me she was too overwhelmed to come?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By making me believe my mother abandoned me?””

Her face changed.

“I knew she would ruin everything.””

The words left her mouth before she could stop them.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Claire froze.

She knew.

Everyone heard.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked like he had expected it.

But I felt something inside me break.

“Ruin everything?””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No. That’s not what I meant.””

“What did you mean?””

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At her family.

At me.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Your mother never accepted me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Yes, it is.””

Her anger finally surfaced.

“She always thought I wasn’t good enough for you.””

I stared at her.

Because even if that had been true, it didn’t explain anything.

“You threatened her?””

“No.””

“You scared her away?””

“No.””

“Then why did she get that message?””

Claire looked at the floor.

And for the first time, I noticed something.

She wasn’t just afraid.

She was calculating.

Like she was searching for the perfect explanation.

My father noticed too.

He pulled out his phone.

“I have the phone records.””

Claire looked up.

“What?””

“The number that sent the message.””

He tapped the screen.

“The phone was registered six months ago.””

My heart pounded.

“Under whose name?””

My father looked at Claire.

No one moved.

“No one’s name.””

Claire released a breath.

A tiny sign of relief.

Then my father continued.

“But the phone was purchased using a credit card.””

He held up the screen.

“And that credit card belongs to someone who paid for part of this wedding.””

Claire went pale.

Her mother whispered, “Claire…”

I felt cold all over.

“Dad,” I said.

My father looked at me.

“Daniel, before you marry someone, you should know what they’re willing to do to get what they want.””

Claire suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Please.””

I looked down at her hand.

Then back at her face.

“Tell me.””

She was crying now.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Her lips trembled.

“I didn’t send the message.””

A pause.

“But…”

Everyone held their breath.

Claire looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“But the person who did it is the reason your mother came here covered in mud.””

I followed her gaze.

May you like

The double doors slowly opened again.

And standing there was the one person I never expected to see at my wedding.
