Chapter 10: The Signature That Should Not Exist
The paper shook in my hands.
Not because it was old.
Not because it contained another impossible secret.
Because it carried her name.
Claire Bennett.
My future wife.
The woman who had promised to stand beside me forever.
Her signature sat at the bottom of a document dated the night I was born.
A night she was never supposed to remember.
A night she wasn’t supposed to have any connection to.
“Explain.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
Claire stared at the paper.
“I can’t.””
Those three words hurt more than any accusation.
“You can’t?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Daniel, I swear I don’t know how that got there.””
My father took the paper from me.
“Someone used your name.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She swallowed.
“No, because that signature…”
She touched the corner of the page without picking it up.
“That’s mine.””
The room went silent.
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I recognize it.””
My father stepped closer.
“Then how?””
“I don’t know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I have never seen this document before.””
Ethan crossed his arms.
“That’s not possible.””
Claire looked at him.
“I know.””
“You expect us to believe someone forged a signature that matches yours perfectly?””
“I don’t know what to tell you.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Claire.””
Her voice was softer than I expected.
“Did you know about Daniel before you met him?””
Claire immediately looked at her.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Then she slowed down.
“I mean… not like this.””
I felt a chill.
“Not like this?””
Claire looked at me.
“I knew your last name.””
“That’s normal.””
“My mother mentioned your family before.””
Margaret looked away.
I noticed.
And Claire noticed that I noticed.
“Mom?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
“Mom, what did you tell me?””
Margaret sat down.
“I told you the Carters were an important family.””
“That’s not all.””
Margaret’s silence was enough.
I looked at Claire.
“You knew my family before you met me.””
She nodded slowly.
“My mother talked about your family.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Margaret finally spoke.
“Because I thought the past was buried.””
My father’s face hardened.
“Apparently it wasn’t.””
I looked at Margaret.
“What does my grandfather have to do with you?””
She looked terrified.
“I was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Your grandfather helped my family.””
My father froze.
“What kind of help?””
Margaret looked down.
“The kind that comes with a price.””
The room went silent.
I felt exhausted.
Every answer created three more questions.
“Enough.””
My voice cut through the room.
Everyone stopped.
“I want the truth.””
I looked at each person.
“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””
I pointed at the documents.
“My entire life is sitting on this table, and apparently everyone knew pieces of it except me.””
Nobody argued.
Ethan quietly opened his laptop.
“I found something.””
Everyone turned.
He connected it to the large screen near the stage.
The same screen that was supposed to show our wedding photos.
Now it displayed records.
“I started searching after Mom received the threatening message.””
Claire looked at him.
“You were investigating?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell Daniel?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I was trying to confirm it before destroying your life.””
I looked away.
Even my brother had been protecting me.
Everyone had.
“I traced the hospital file number.””
He clicked.
“This document was copied several times.””
A list appeared.
Dates.
Names.
Locations.
My father leaned closer.
“Those dates…”
He stopped.
“What?””
He pointed.
“The copies were made over thirty years.””
I frowned.
“By who?””
Ethan clicked again.
The names appeared.
My heart stopped.
Because one name appeared more than once.
Claire Bennett.
I looked at her.
She looked like she was going to collapse.
“I didn’t.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I know.””
“You do?””
“Yes.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Because the copies weren’t made by Claire.””
He pointed to the records.
“They were made using an account connected to her.””
I frowned.
“What’s the difference?””
Ethan looked at Margaret.
“The account belonged to someone else.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Ethan turned the screen.
A name appeared.
Margaret Bennett.
Claire’s mother.
Claire stepped back.
“No.””
Margaret started crying.
“I can explain.””
I stared at her.
“Please do.””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know what I was helping with.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I was told I was protecting my daughter.””
Claire looked horrified.
“Protecting me from what?””
Margaret whispered:
“The truth.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“What truth?””
Margaret looked directly at me.
“Daniel…”
Her voice trembled.
“You were never supposed to grow up in this family.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She closed her eyes.
“Your grandfather had another plan.””
Before anyone could respond, the ballroom lights suddenly flickered.
Then every screen in the room went black.
A second later, one file appeared.
A video.

Recorded thirty years ago.
And the person speaking on the screen was my grandfather.
