Chapter 4: The Unexpected Guest

The ballroom doors opened slowly.

Every person inside turned toward the entrance.

I expected to see someone I hated.

Someone who had betrayed my family.

Someone who had been hiding in the shadows.

But instead, I saw someone who made my entire body go still.

My brother.

Ethan.

He stood beneath the doorway, wearing a wrinkled jacket, his face pale and exhausted. He looked like he had driven through the night to get there.

For months, Ethan and I had barely spoken.

Not because we hated each other.

Because life had pulled us in different directions.

He had moved across the country after an argument with our father. He said he needed space. Dad said Ethan was being stubborn.

And I had been caught in the middle.

The last time I saw him, he told me something I never forgot.

“Daniel, someday you’re going to realize people don’t always show you who they really are.””

At the time, I thought he was talking about our father.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

“Ethan?”” I whispered.

He looked at me.

Then he looked at Claire.

And the expression on his face told me everything.

He wasn’t surprised.

He was disappointed.

Claire stepped backward.

“No.””

The same word.

The same fear.

My stomach tightened.

“Why is my brother here?””

Nobody answered.

Ethan slowly walked into the ballroom.

The guests moved aside.

My father lowered the microphone.

“You came.””

Ethan nodded.

“I almost didn’t.””

Claire’s voice shook.

“You have no right to be here.””

Everyone turned.

Ethan looked at her.

“I have every right.””

“You left this family.””

“Yes.””

His eyes hardened.

“But I never tried to destroy it.””

A silence fell.

I looked between them.

“Someone please explain what’s happening.””

Ethan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My heart sank.

Not another envelope.

Not another secret.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “I came here because Mom deserved to tell you the truth.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“Ethan…”

“I know, Mom.””

He looked at her.

“I know you wanted to protect him.””

Then he faced me.

“But protecting him is what allowed this to happen.””

I felt anger rise.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan walked closer.

“It means Claire wasn’t the first person who tried to keep you away from Mom.””

Claire shook her head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Ethan ignored her.

“Three months ago, Mom found out someone had been accessing her private messages.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“She thought it was a mistake. Then she found emails deleted. Photos moved. Conversations changed.””

My mother looked down.

“I thought I was imagining things.””

Ethan continued.

“But then she found something.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a printed copy of a message.

I recognized my mother’s handwriting on the top.

“What is that?””

Ethan looked at me.

“A conversation between Mom and Claire.””

The room exploded.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“That’s fake.””

Ethan smiled sadly.

“You always say that when you’re scared.””

Her face changed.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

Ethan held the paper away.

I looked at Claire.

“Why would there be a conversation between you and my mother?””

She didn’t answer.

That was becoming her pattern.

My father took the paper from Ethan and read it silently.

His face changed.

Then he handed it to me.

The first sentence made my hands go cold.

“Mrs. Carter, if you truly love Daniel, you will stay away from this wedding.””

I looked up.

My mother started crying.

“I never sent that.””

I kept reading.

The message continued.

“You don’t understand what happens when you interfere.””

My breathing became shallow.

Because those weren’t my mother’s words.

They were written as if someone was pretending to be her.

Someone wanted Claire to look like the victim.

Someone wanted my mother to look unstable.

I turned the page.

At the bottom was a name.

A name that shouldn’t have been there.

Claire’s.

I looked at her.

“Why is your name on this?””

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t write that.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Then explain why it came from an account created with your email.””

The room went silent.

Claire’s face lost all color.

I felt like I was watching my entire marriage collapse in real time.

But then Claire whispered something.

Something that made everyone freeze.

“You don’t understand.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was trying to stop something worse from happening.””

I stared at her.

“What could possibly be worse?””

Claire looked at my mother.

Then at my father.

Then finally at me.

And she said:

“Your mother knows why someone wanted you to never find out the truth about your birth.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

My father’s face changed instantly.

My mother looked away.

And for the first time that night, I realized everyone had been keeping a secret from me.
