Chapter 8: The Father Behind the Funeral

Don Vittorio Moretti descended the staircase one step at a time.

Ricardo's father was seventy-one, silver-haired, and impeccably dressed in a charcoal overcoat. He carried a polished walking stick, though I'd heard he could still put a man on the floor without one.

His expression held neither surprise nor shame.

Only disappointment.

“Ricardo,” he said.

“You should have stayed home.””

Ricardo stood motionless.

For the first time since I'd met him, he seemed unable to find the right words.

“You knew,” he finally whispered.

Vittorio stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

“I knew what needed to be done.””

“You told me Sarah was dead.””

“I told you what would keep you focused.””

Ricardo stared at his father as if he were looking at a stranger.

“You let me bury my wife in my mind every day for fourteen months.””

“Your wife betrayed this family.””

The words echoed through the abandoned hospital.

I stepped forward.

“Sarah didn't betray anyone.””

Vittorio turned toward me.

“And you must be Clara. The sister.””

He said the word as though it were an insult.

“Sarah spoke about you often. She always believed you were innocent of the world around her.””

“I am innocent of your crimes.””

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“Not for long.””

Ricardo moved between us.

“Leave her out of this.””

Vittorio sighed.

“You've always had that weakness, my son. You confuse protecting people with loving them.””

“Where is Sarah?””

“Alive. For now.””

Ricardo raised his pistol.

Whitmore immediately lifted his remote control.

“Put it down,” the attorney warned.

“One press, and the room she's in fills with gas.””

My blood turned to ice.

Ricardo's finger remained on the trigger, but his hand trembled.

“You wouldn't.””

Whitmore tilted his head.

“Would you like to test me?””

Vittorio tapped his walking stick against the floor.

“Enough. We're not here to argue about Sarah.””

He looked at Ricardo.

“We're here because you've become a liability.””

Ricardo's face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you've spent too much time chasing ghosts and not enough time managing the organization your grandfather built.””

“I never asked to inherit your organization.””

“No. You merely accepted every benefit it gave you.””

Vittorio approached a dusty reception desk and placed a thick folder on it.

“Sarah found the accounts. She discovered that I had been moving money through legitimate companies for years. She found the payments to judges, police officers, and politicians. She was going to hand everything to federal investigators.””

Ricardo stared at the folder.

“So you tried to kill her.””

“I arranged for her to disappear.””

“You blew up her car!””

“The car was supposed to be empty.””

My stomach lurched.

Vittorio continued as calmly as if discussing the weather.

“Sarah had changed her route without informing anyone. She survived, unfortunately, and began making demands. She wanted the children removed from the family.

She wanted you to abandon the business. She wanted everything destroyed.””

Ricardo's voice cracked.

“She wanted her children safe.””

“She wanted to destroy everything I built.””

“She wanted to save us!””

The shout reverberated through the hospital.

Vittorio's expression hardened.

“Lower your voice.””

Ricardo laughed, a broken sound that made my chest ache.

“You don't get to tell me how to speak to you anymore.””

Vittorio's eyes narrowed.

“You are my son.””

“And she was your daughter-in-law!””

“She was a threat.””

The silence that followed was terrible.

I watched Ricardo's face change. Something inside him had finally snapped, not into violence, but into understanding.

He lowered his gun.

“Why the children?””

Vittorio looked almost bored.

“Because children create obligations. They make men predictable.””

Ricardo stared at him.

“You used Leo to control me.””

“I used what I had.””

“And Amelia?””

Vittorio's expression briefly softened, though not with affection.

“The girl was never supposed to survive the delivery.””

I felt my hand fly to my mouth.

Ricardo lunged forward.

Whitmore pressed the remote, and a sharp electronic beep rang through the room.

“STOP!”” the attorney shouted.

Ricardo froze.

Vittorio calmly adjusted his cuff.

“The doctor had instructions. The girl was to be declared dead, transferred to a private facility, and eventually placed with a family who could raise her without asking questions.””

“And when Sarah discovered the truth?””

“She became difficult.””

I stepped toward him.

“You stole her baby.””

Vittorio looked directly at me.

“Yes.””

The simplicity of the admission made me feel sick.

“You let her believe her daughter was dead.””

“She was easier to manage when she had nothing left to lose.””

Ricardo closed his eyes.

When he opened them, the grief had become something colder.

“Where is my wife?””

Vittorio pointed toward Whitmore.

“Your attorney will take you to her. You'll sign the transfer documents, surrender custody of both children, and withdraw from the organization. Then we can all move on.””

“And if I refuse?””

Whitmore raised the remote again.

“Sarah dies.””

Ricardo looked at the screen mounted on the wall.

Sarah's face appeared once more.

She was crying now, shaking her head.

Then, suddenly, she leaned toward the camera.

Her lips moved.

I read the words.

The necklace.

I looked down at the silver heart in my hand.

Sarah had hidden the microSD card inside it. The card contained the evidence they'd spent fourteen months trying to recover.

But she'd also built the security system in Ricardo's estate around that necklace.

Could it contain something else?

I examined the tiny compartment.

Inside the hinge, almost invisible beneath the metal, was a second indentation.

I pressed it.

A narrow strip of metal slid out.

On it were four engraved digits.

*0416.*

Sarah's birthday.

I looked at the wall-mounted screen.

A small keypad was mounted beneath it.

Without thinking, I crossed the room and entered the code.

Whitmore shouted, “Don't touch that!””

Too late.

The screen changed.

A map appeared, showing the hospital's lower level, followed by a flashing red dot.

*ROOM 0416 — LIVE AUDIO ENABLED.*

Sarah's voice suddenly filled the lobby.

“Ricardo, if you're hearing this, then my father-in-law has finally shown you who he is.””

Vittorio's face drained of color.

Sarah continued.

“There's something he doesn't know. I didn't hide the evidence to protect myself. I hid it because it proves who actually ordered the explosion.””

Ricardo stared at the screen.

“Who?”” he whispered.

Sarah took a trembling breath.

Then she spoke a name.

“Ricardo Moretti.””

The room fell silent.

Whitmore smiled.

May you like

Vittorio lowered his head.

And Ricardo stood frozen, staring at the screen as if his entire life had just become a lie.
