Chapter 14: The Son Who Came Back for Revenge

Daniel Cross lowered his pistol.

For several seconds, he didn't seem to understand what Ricardo had said.

Then his face changed.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

“You knew?”” Ricardo asked.

Daniel looked at Michael's body.

“I suspected.””

“You've been working for me for twelve years.””

“Yes.””

“You protected my son.””

“Yes.””

“You watched over my wife.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“When I could.””

Ricardo stepped toward him.

“And all this time, you knew you were my cousin?””

Daniel looked up.

“My name isn't Daniel Cross.””

He reached inside his jacket and removed an old photograph.

It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket, lying beside a handwritten note.

*CHILD OF DANIEL VANCE AND ELENA VANCE.*

My mother's name.

I stared at it.

“That's impossible.””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Your mother was my mother too.””

I felt the room tilt.

“No. My mother only had two children.””

“That's what she told you.””

He held out the photograph.

“I was born before you and Sarah. Michael took me from the hospital and gave me to his brother. I grew up believing I was unwanted.””

Sarah, now free of her restraints, stepped closer.

“Daniel, I didn't know.””

“I know.””

His voice held no anger toward her.

Only exhaustion.

“When I was seventeen, Michael told me the truth. He said our father had abandoned me because he wanted a respectable family with another woman.””

I shook my head.

“Our father would never have done that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your real father tried to find me. He spent years searching. Michael killed him before he could bring me home.””

I remembered the recording.

The forged authorization.

The payments to people who didn't exist.

The pieces were falling into place.

“You joined Ricardo's organization to get revenge,” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“I wanted to find the people who took my life from me. I wanted to know why my mother had let them.””

He looked at Ricardo.

“At first, I planned to destroy the Morettis. I believed they were responsible for everything. Then I met Sarah.””

Sarah wiped her eyes.

“You helped me escape the hospital.””

“I did.””

“You helped me contact Clara.””

“Yes.””

“And you hid Amelia.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I thought keeping the children separated would make them harder to find.””

Ricardo's expression hardened.

“You let me believe my daughter was dead.””

“I know.””

“You watched me grieve.””

“I know.””

Ricardo raised his pistol.

Daniel didn't move.

“Then why shouldn't I kill you?””

Daniel looked directly into his eyes.

“Because I'm the only person who knows where Michael hid the original birth records. And because the man who ordered your wife's explosion is still alive.””

Ricardo's finger tightened on the trigger.

“Michael ordered it.””

“No,” Daniel said quietly.

“Michael helped arrange it. But someone else paid him.””

Sarah went still.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother.””

The silence was absolute.

I felt as if the floor had vanished beneath my feet.

“No.””

Daniel reached into his jacket and produced a folded bank statement.

“Elena transferred the money through a private trust. She believed Sarah was going to expose the truth about Michael and the children. She paid him to make Sarah disappear.””

I shook my head violently.

“She wouldn't.””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“Clara…”

I turned toward her.

“Don't.””

She swallowed.

“I found the transfer in the records. I didn't want to believe it either.””

My chest tightened.

“She was being threatened.””

“Maybe,” Sarah whispered.

“But she still made the payment.””

I looked at the stairs.

My mother was upstairs.

Waiting for me.

I wanted to run to her and demand answers. I wanted to hear her explain that everything was a misunderstanding, that she'd been protecting us, that there was still some version of our family worth saving.

But I knew better now.

Love didn't erase what people had done.

And being afraid didn't make every choice forgivable.

Ricardo lowered his pistol.

“Where are the children?””

Daniel took out his phone.

“Safe. My team moved them to a secure location when the house was compromised.””

“Which location?””

“I'll take you there.””

Ricardo stared at him.

“You expect me to trust you?””

“No,” Daniel answered.

“I expect you to verify everything.””

For the first time, Ricardo seemed to respect him.

He lowered his weapon completely.

“Then start by telling me who the boy really is.””

Daniel took a breath.

“My name is Daniel Vance. I'm your cousin. And I'm the man who has been living in your house under a false identity because Michael told me that if I ever came forward, he'd kill the children.””

Sarah took his hand.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You didn't do this.””

Ricardo turned away.

“Let's go.””

We left the underground room together.

Upstairs, my mother sat in the chair where we'd left her. Her wrists were free, but she hadn't moved.

When she saw Sarah, she began to cry.

“Sarah.””

My sister stopped in the doorway.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then my mother stood.

“I am so sorry.””

Sarah looked at her.

“Did you pay Michael to kill me?””

My mother's face crumpled.

“I thought he would frighten you into leaving Ricardo. I thought you'd go somewhere safe.””

“You paid a man who stole my baby.””

“I didn't know about Amelia.””

“You paid a man who helped fake my death!””

My mother began sobbing.

“I was afraid.””

Sarah stared at her.

“So was I.””

The words were quiet.

They were also final.

My mother looked toward me.

“Clara, please.””

I couldn't answer.

Not yet.

Outside, sirens approached the estate.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and turned toward Ricardo.

“The federal team is on the way. They have Michael's files.””

Ricardo nodded.

“Good.””

Then Daniel's expression changed.

“There's one more thing.””

He held out his phone.

A live video showed a small room with a single chair.

A little boy sat in the middle of it.

He had Ricardo's dark eyes and Sarah's green ones.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

“Dad?””

Ricardo went completely still.

The boy continued.

“My name is Noah.””

He swallowed.

“Uncle Michael told me you were the reason Mommy died.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

Noah looked down at his hands.

“But I found a letter.””

He lifted a folded page toward the camera.

“Mommy wrote that if I ever met you, I should ask you one question.””

Ricardo stepped closer to the screen.

“What question, son?””

Noah raised his eyes.

“Did you know I was alive when you ordered them to take me away?””

Ricardo's face went white.

Because he had never ordered anyone to take Noah.

But the signature on the document displayed beneath the video was unmistakably his.

And this time, it wasn't forged.
