Chapter 11: The Recording That Changed Everything
Ricardo drove like a man with nothing left to lose.
The black sedan tore through Brooklyn's midnight streets while Daniel followed in a second vehicle. I sat beside Ricardo, clutching my phone and trying not to look at the photographs of the children.
Every time I blinked, I saw Sarah tied to that chair.
Every time I breathed, I heard my father's voice.
I did love you.
I wanted to believe he'd meant it.
I wanted to hate him without remembering the man who'd carried me home when I fell asleep in the back seat after family dinners.
But the worst part wasn't discovering that he'd lied.
It was realizing I couldn't separate the lies from the memories anymore.
“Clara.””
Ricardo's voice pulled me back.
“Look at me.””
I turned.
“We're getting them back.””
“You can't promise that.””
“No,” he admitted.
“But I can promise I won't stop.””
He returned his attention to the road.
“Tell me about the recording.””
I took the microSD card from my pocket.
“Sarah said it contained evidence against everyone involved. But we haven't listened to it.””
“Then we'll listen now.””
Ricardo connected his phone to the car's secure system and inserted the card into a small adapter Daniel had provided.
A list of files appeared.
There were dozens of documents, photographs, and audio recordings.
One file was labeled *APRIL 16 — ORIGINAL*.
I pressed play.
A man's voice filled the car.
My father's voice.
“If the girl survives, she'll expose everything.””
A second man answered.
Vittorio.
“Then the girl doesn't survive.””
My stomach twisted.
The recording continued.
“Sarah has the documents,” my father said.
“The sister has the key. If Sarah dies, the evidence disappears with her.””
Vittorio replied, “And Ricardo?””
“Ricardo will believe whatever I tell him. He's always wanted a father who was proud of him.””
Ricardo's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
The recording continued.
“Once the explosion happens, we move the baby. The boy stays with Ricardo. The girl goes to the family I selected. No one asks questions.””
A third voice entered the conversation.
Thomas Whitmore.
“What if Sarah survives?””
My father answered without hesitation.
“Then we use her.””
The audio ended.
For several seconds, the only sound was the engine.
Ricardo pulled the car to the side of the road.
He stared at the dashboard.
“I trusted them.””
I looked at him.
“You were trying to trust your father.””
He shook his head.
“I knew what Vittorio was capable of. I knew Whitmore handled things that shouldn't have been handled. I told myself that as long as I kept my family away from the business, they would be safe.””
His voice cracked.
“I put Sarah in danger because I believed I could control the people around me.””
I reached for his hand.
“You didn't order the explosion.””
“No. But I helped create the world where they thought they could get away with it.””
He looked at me.
“That's a difference I have to live with.””
Before I could answer, Daniel's voice came through the car speaker.
“Boss, we've located the transmission source. It's coming from an abandoned recording studio near the waterfront.””
Ricardo started the engine.
“Send the coordinates.””
A moment later, the navigation screen updated.
We were less than ten minutes away.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“There's something else. The original file has been copied to an external server. Someone is uploading it now.””
“Can you stop it?””
“Not without knowing where it's going.””
I looked at the file list.
One document had appeared at the bottom.
*BENEFICIARY RECORD — CONFIDENTIAL.*
I opened it.
The document contained a list of names, dates, and payments. Most were unfamiliar. But one name appeared beside a transfer made six months before my father's supposed death.
*ELENA VANCE.*
My mother.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“No.””
Ricardo glanced at the screen.
“Who is Elena Vance?””
“My mother.””
I scrolled down.
The payments continued for years after my father's death. Monthly transfers. Medical expenses.
Private travel. A house registered under a different name.
Then I found the final entry.
*FINAL PAYMENT: $500,000. BENEFICIARY: ELENA VANCE. CONDITION: SILENCE REGARDING IDENTITY TRANSFER.*
I couldn't move.
“My mother knew.””
Ricardo pulled the car into an empty parking lot.
“Clara, we don't know what this means.””
“She knew he was alive.””
I stared at the screen.
“She knew my father wasn't dead. She let us mourn him. She let Sarah believe she'd lost both parents.””
My voice broke.
“She let me visit his grave.””
Ricardo reached for my shoulder.
“Maybe she was threatened.””
“Maybe.””
But the word felt empty.
My phone rang.
MOM appeared on the screen.
I stared at it until the ringing stopped.
Then it rang again.
I answered.
“Clara?””
My mother's voice sounded breathless.
“Where are you?””
I couldn't speak.
“Sweetheart, listen to me. You need to come home immediately.””
“Did you know?””
Silence.
“Mom, did you know Dad was alive?””
A faint sob came through the speaker.
“Clara, I can explain.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did you know?””
“Yes.””
The word shattered what remained of my childhood.
“How long?””
“Since before the funeral.””
I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.
“You let me bury an empty grave.””
“Your father said he would come back when it was safe.””
“And Sarah?””
“He said he had to protect both of you.””
“By disappearing?””
“He threatened me, Clara.””
My mother's voice broke.
“He said if I told either of you, he would take you away forever.””
I looked at Ricardo.
He listened without interrupting.
“Why did you take the money?”” I asked.
“I didn't want it. He sent it anyway. He said it was compensation for everything we'd lost.””
“Everything we'd lost?””
I laughed bitterly.
“He was the reason we lost it!””
My mother began crying.
“Clara, please. I know I've made terrible mistakes, but I was trying to keep you safe.””
“Then tell me where he is.””
She went silent.
“Mom?””
“I don't know.””
I almost hung up.
Then she whispered, “But I know where Sarah was taken.””
My entire body went still.
“Where?””
“The old Bellweather estate, outside the city. Your father bought it under a false name. He used to take Sarah there when she was little.””
I looked at Ricardo.
He immediately signaled Daniel to change course.
“Why would he take her there now?”” I asked.
My mother's voice dropped.
“Because there's a room beneath the house that no one else knows about.””
A terrible thought crossed my mind.
“What room?””
“The room where he kept your real father's things.””
The call disconnected.
Ricardo accelerated toward the waterfront.
We were almost at the recording studio when Daniel's voice erupted through the speaker.
“Boss, stop! Don't go to the studio!””
“Why?””
“It's a trap. The police have surrounded the building.””
Ricardo swore.
“Who called them?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Someone sent them the recording. They believe you're responsible for the explosion and the kidnappings.””
I looked down at my phone.
The original recording was still open.
Someone had copied it and sent it to the authorities.
Someone wanted Ricardo arrested before we could reach Sarah.
Then a new message appeared.
*YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO TURN OVER THE CARD.*
A second message followed.
*OR YOUR MOTHER DIES FIRST.*
Attached was a live video.
My mother sat in a chair inside a dark room, her hands bound.
Behind her stood the man who had raised me.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Clara,” he said calmly, “you've always been the daughter who asks too many questions.””
May you like
He lifted a pistol and placed it against my mother's head.
“Let's see whether you're finally willing to listen.””
