Chapter 13: The Uncle Who Stole Three Children
For a moment, nobody moved.
My uncle stood beneath the bare lightbulb, smiling at Ricardo as though they'd met for coffee instead of in a hidden room filled with evidence of kidnapping, murder, and betrayal.
His name was Michael Vance.
In the photographs I'd grown up with, he was the handsome younger brother who visited us every Christmas, brought Sarah expensive presents, and taught me how to shuffle a deck of cards.
He'd disappeared from our lives shortly after our father's funeral.
My mother had told us he'd moved overseas.
Now he stood in front of me, older and grayer, with the same familiar smile.
“Uncle Michael?”” I whispered.
He turned toward me.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
I backed away from him.
“Don't call me that.””
His smile faded slightly.
“Clara, I understand you're upset.””
“Upset?””
I pointed at Sarah, still tied to the chair.
“You helped kidnap my sister's children. You helped fake her death. You made me believe my father was buried in a cemetery while he was alive somewhere, and now you're telling me you're their father?””
Michael sighed.
“Your sister's children are complicated.””
Sarah spat at his shoes.
“Don't you dare call them yours.””
He looked down at the stain.
Then he took a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his shoe with deliberate care.
“You always were emotional, Sarah.””
Ricardo raised his pistol.
“Explain. Now.””
Michael glanced at the weapon.
“You won't shoot me.””
“Try me.””
“You need answers. I have them.””
Ricardo's jaw tightened.
“Then start talking.””
Michael pulled a chair away from the table and sat down.
“My father built a financial network that connected the Vance family to the Moretti organization. Your father, Ricardo, expanded it. I maintained it. Everyone prospered until Sarah discovered where the money was really going.””
“Money laundering,” I said.
“Among other things.””
“And the explosion?””
Michael folded his hands.
“Your father arranged it. I helped him.””
Sarah struggled against her restraints.
“You told me the car would be empty!””
“It was supposed to be.””
“You knew I was going to the clinic!””
Michael's expression hardened.
“You changed your route without telling anyone.””
“So you tried to kill me?””
“I tried to protect the family.””
Sarah laughed through her tears.
“You stole my baby!””
Michael's composure finally cracked.
“I saved your daughter!””
“You took her from my arms!””
The scream tore through the room.
Even Michael flinched.
Sarah's face was wet with tears.
“I woke up in that hospital bed, and the doctor told me my little girl was dead. I begged them to let me see her. I begged them to show me her body.””
Her voice broke.
“You let me believe my baby had died.””
Michael looked away.
“Your daughter was never safe with you.””
“She was my child!””
“And you were married to Ricardo Moretti!””
He slammed his palm against the table.
“Do you know what that meant? Your daughter would have grown up surrounded by enemies, guns, and men who would use her to control her father. I gave her a chance at a normal life.””
Ricardo moved so quickly that Michael barely had time to stand.
He seized my uncle by the collar and slammed him against the wall.
“You don't get to justify stealing a child by pretending you saved her.””
Michael's face reddened.
“You think you're any better? Your father raised you to be a criminal. You surrounded Sarah with danger and called it protection.””
Ricardo tightened his grip.
“I loved her.””
“And I loved her too.””
The room went silent.
Sarah stared at her uncle with open disgust.
Michael continued, his voice quieter now.
“I loved Sarah long before she met you. I watched her marry you. I watched her build a family with you. And I watched her throw everything away because she believed she could change you.””
Ricardo released him with a shove.
“You were jealous.””
Michael straightened his jacket.
“I was patient.””
He looked at Sarah.
“When the first baby was born, I realized I had one opportunity to take what should have belonged to me.””
Sarah went pale.
“You mean Amelia?””
“Yes.””
“And Leo?”” Ricardo demanded.
Michael smiled.
“Leo was born later. He complicated matters, but he was useful. As long as you believed your son was your only child and your daughter was dead, you were predictable.””
Ricardo looked ready to kill him.
I stepped between them.
“Who raised the other boy?””
Michael's smile returned.
“My brother.””
I stared at him.
“You mean our real father's younger brother?””
“No, Clara. I mean my brother.””
He leaned toward me.
“The man who raised you was not your biological father. Your biological father was Daniel Vance, my older brother. He died when you were twelve. I took his place afterward.””
The words made my head spin.
“You killed him.””
Michael nodded.
“He discovered what I'd done with the first child. He threatened to expose me. I couldn't allow that.””
Sarah began sobbing.
“And the boy?””
Michael's eyes moved toward Ricardo.
“He grew up believing his parents had abandoned him. My brother raised him, trained him, and taught him to hate the Morettis. Eventually, he was placed inside Ricardo's organization under a false identity.””
Ricardo's expression turned murderous.
“Who is he?””
Michael smiled.
“You know him.””
Before he could say more, Daniel Cross appeared at the top of the stairs, his pistol raised.
“Boss!””
Ricardo turned.
Daniel descended slowly.
“Don't move, Michael.””
My uncle laughed.
“Oh, Daniel. You really should have stayed loyal.””
Daniel's expression remained cold.
“I've been loyal to the wrong people for twelve years.””
He moved toward Sarah and began cutting her restraints.
Michael watched him without concern.
“You think this changes anything? The evidence is already being destroyed.””
“Not anymore,” Daniel replied.
He pulled a second phone from his jacket.
“The original files have been sent to federal investigators. Every payment. Every forged signature. Every medical record.””
Michael's smile vanished.
“You wouldn't.””
“I already did.””
For the first time, my uncle looked afraid.
Then he glanced at Ricardo.
“You've made a terrible mistake.””
Ricardo raised his pistol.
“No. You did.””
Michael reached into his coat.
Daniel shouted, “GUN!””
A shot exploded.
Sarah screamed.
I dropped to my knees beside her.
Ricardo stood motionless, staring at the man on the floor.
Michael Vance lay against the table, blood spreading across his white shirt.
His eyes remained open.
His lips moved.
I leaned closer.
“Clara,” he whispered.
“You still don't know which child belongs to whom.””
Then his hand fell limp.
A second later, Ricardo's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And slowly raised his eyes toward me.
“Clara,” he said, his voice barely audible.
“They found the boy.””
“Where?””
Ricardo swallowed.
“Inside my house.””
May you like
His face crumpled.
“And he's been living there under the name Daniel Cross.””
