Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden In A Child’s Handwriting

I stared at the note.

The room seemed to tilt.

The handwriting was messy.

Uneven.

The letters were too big in some places and too small in others.

But I knew it.

It was Lily’s.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me.

Because people who tell the truth usually don’t need time to prepare.

“I found it.””

“Where?””

“In her room.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

My voice was sharper than I intended.

“It matters.””

She crossed her arms.

“I found it after she started acting out.””

I looked at the note again.

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“Because I wanted to handle it.””

“Handle it?””

I held up the paper.

“She was asking for help.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Or she was trying to turn you against me.””

I couldn’t believe it.

A child’s fear had become an accusation.

A child’s pain had become an inconvenience.

I folded the note carefully.

Then I put it in my pocket.

Vanessa noticed.

“You’re keeping that?””

“Yes.””

“Michael.””

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“Tonight, I’m done questioning my daughter.””

A strange silence followed.

Then Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not guilty.

Tired.

“I didn’t hate her.””

I didn’t respond.

“I need you to understand that.””

“Then explain.””

She looked down.

“I was overwhelmed.””

“By what?””

“By everything.””

She gestured around the room.

“This house. The kids. You working all the time.””

I listened.

Not because I believed her.

Because I wanted to understand how someone got to this point.

“I thought if I controlled things, everything would stay together.””

“Controlled?””

She nodded.

“The food. The schedule. The rules.””

“You controlled my daughter.””

“I was trying to help.””

“No.””

My voice stayed calm.

“You were trying to control her.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But I didn’t know if they were regret or frustration.

“I made mistakes.””

I looked at her.

“Mistakes are forgetting a permission slip.””

Silence.

“Mistakes are burning dinner.””

I stepped closer.

“Making a child feel unwanted is not a mistake.””

Her face hardened again.

“There’s something you don’t know.””

I waited.

She reached for her phone.

“I didn’t start recording because I wanted to punish Lily.””

“Then why?””

She opened another video.

This one was different.

It showed Lily standing in the hallway.

Looking at something on the floor.

Then Lily picked up a small object.

A necklace.

My necklace.

The one I thought I had lost months ago.

I frowned.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She took it.””

I watched.

Lily held the necklace carefully.

Then she hugged it.

“She stole from you.””

My eyes stayed on the screen.

But something felt wrong.

Because Lily wasn’t hiding it.

She wasn’t acting guilty.

She looked sad.

I watched closer.

Then I saw something.

A piece of paper beside her.

Lily picked it up.

The camera zoomed slightly.

And I could see my own handwriting.

A note I had written years ago.

A note I had forgotten existed.

My heart started racing.

Because the necklace wasn’t the real secret.

The note was.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where did you get this video?””

She didn’t answer.

“Where?””

Her face went pale.

Then she whispered:

“From the camera you don’t know I installed in Lily’s room.””

I froze.

Because if that was true…

Then Vanessa hadn’t just been watching Lily.

She had been watching everything.

And suddenly I realized something worse.

May you like

She had been recording my daughter long before tonight.

She had been waiting for something.
