Chapter 14: The Last Secret Sarah Left Behind
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But it felt like hours.
I immediately moved toward the stairs.
“Lily.””
“Daddy?””
Her voice came from upstairs.
“I’m here.””
I reached her room.
She ran into my arms.
“Are we leaving?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
For once, there was no hesitation.
No discussion.
No pretending everything would be fine.
We were leaving.
I grabbed our bags.
Then I stopped.
Because Vanessa was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
She looked at Lily.
And Lily looked back.
A complicated silence passed between them.
I expected anger.
I expected fear.
But Lily only whispered:
“Why?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I don’t have a good answer.””
“That’s not fair.””
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“It isn’t.””
Lily hugged herself.
“You said I wasn’t your real daughter.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“You said I was difficult.””
“I know.””
“You made me feel bad.””
Vanessa looked broken.
“I know.””
The honesty was painful.
Because sometimes apologies hurt more when they arrive too late.
“I’m sorry, Lily.””
My daughter didn’t respond.
She just held my hand tighter.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Someone had entered the house.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Daniel.””
I grabbed the nearest object I could use to defend us.
“Where is he?””
She whispered:
“He’ll go for the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones Sarah found.””
My heart raced.
“Where are they?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then at Lily.
“I hid them.””
“Where?””
“In the box.””
The wooden box.
The one Lily found.
I grabbed it.
Inside, beneath the old letters, was a hidden compartment.
I opened it.
And found a small flash drive.
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s what Daniel wanted.””
Footsteps moved through the hallway.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who believed they owned the place.
Then a man appeared.
Older.
Cold eyes.
Daniel.
He looked at me.
“You should have left this alone.””
I stepped in front of Lily.
“You killed my wife.””
His expression barely changed.
“No.””
He smiled.
“She killed herself by refusing to cooperate.””
My hands clenched.
Vanessa shouted:
“Daniel, stop.””
He looked at her.
“You ruined everything.””
“I was scared.””
“You were weak.””
The way he spoke to her explained everything.
Vanessa wasn’t the mastermind.
She was another person trapped by him.
But that didn’t excuse what she did.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Give me the drive.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“You really think you understand what happened?””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked at Lily.
“She looks just like Sarah.””
I moved immediately.
“Don’t look at her.””
He laughed.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“She was always the reminder.””
My stomach dropped.
“Of what?””
“Of everything I lost.””
The police sirens suddenly sounded outside.
Daniel froze.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You called them?””
I nodded.
“Before the lights went out.””
Daniel backed away.
But he wasn’t worried.
He smiled.
“You think this ends with me?””
The front door opened.
Officers rushed inside.
Daniel was arrested within minutes.
But before they took him away, he looked at me.
“You want the truth?””
I stared.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Ask Vanessa why Sarah kept that letter.””
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
Again.
The letter.
The one Sarah wrote.
After the officers left, I turned.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“Because Sarah knew.””
“Knew what?””
She swallowed.
“That I was involved.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Not with the accident.””
She shook her head quickly.
“But with the secret.””
“What secret?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“The reason Sarah was really investigating Daniel.””
I waited.
Vanessa whispered:
“Because Daniel wasn’t working alone.””
The room went silent.
“Who else?””
May you like
Vanessa looked at the flash drive.
“Someone inside your family.””
