Chapter 12: The Person Watching Us

I ran to the window.

Nothing.

Just an empty street.

But the picture on my phone was real.

Someone had been watching my daughter.

Someone close enough to take the photo.

I grabbed my keys.

Then stopped.

Because Lily was behind me.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Her eyes were wide.

She had seen the message.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Everything’s okay.””

She didn’t believe me.

Children always know when adults are pretending.

“No, it’s not.””

I sat beside her.

“Sweetheart, I need you to listen carefully.””

She nodded.

“If anyone ever tells you to keep secrets from me, what do you do?””

“Tell you.””

“Even if they say I’ll be angry?””

“Tell you.””

“Even if they say it will hurt someone?””

She nodded.

“Tell you.””

I hugged her.

Because I needed her to know something Vanessa had taken away.

Her voice mattered.

Her truth mattered.

A knock came at the door.

I froze.

Nobody knew we were home.

I walked slowly downstairs.

“Who is it?””

No answer.

Then another knock.

Harder.

I checked the security camera.

The screen showed a person standing outside.

A woman.

I felt my heart stop.

Vanessa.

I opened the door halfway.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Scared.

“Michael, you need to listen.””

I almost laughed.

“Now you want me to listen?””

She looked past me.

“Is Lily inside?””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t ask about my daughter.””

Her face tightened.

“Because you don’t understand what’s happening.””

“You mean the cameras?””

“No.””

“The food?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

“Rachel contacted you.””

I went silent.

Vanessa knew.

“How?””

She closed her eyes.

“I knew she would eventually.””

That answer was terrifying.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

Vanessa looked around.

Like someone might hear.

“She’s not who you think.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“She was involved with Sarah.””

“So were you.””

Her face changed.

“I never wanted Sarah dead.””

The words hit me.

Not because of what she said.

Because she said them.

I never accused her of killing Sarah.

Not once.

But she defended herself anyway.

Silence.

Then I asked:

“Why did you come here?””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a folder.

“I found this after you left.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Proof that Rachel is lying.””

I stared.

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“I expect you to protect Lily.””

My body went still.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“Rachel doesn’t care about your daughter.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Neither did you.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But she continued.

“She wants something.””

“What?””

“She wants revenge.””

“Against who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Me.””

A car suddenly drove past the house.

Both of us turned.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Someone followed me here.””

I looked back at her.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

She grabbed my arm.

“Michael, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“Why should I?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Sarah didn’t die in an accident.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I know who was there.””

My voice dropped.

“Who?””

She looked toward the street.

Then whispered:

“The person who caused it…”

A shadow moved outside the window.

May you like

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“…is standing outside your house right now.””
