Chapter 11: The Plan Behind The Marriage
I stared at the documents.
My mind refused to process them.
There were emails.
Photos.
Dates.
Everything connected to Vanessa.
And Sarah.
“This can’t be real.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
I looked at her.
“You expect me to believe Vanessa planned to meet me?””
“I expect you to look at the evidence.””
I turned the pages.
The first email was from years ago.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was someone named Daniel.
I read the first line.
“Everything is moving according to plan.””
My stomach twisted.
“What is Daniel?””
Rachel looked away.
“Her brother.””
I looked back at the page.
“What plan?””
Rachel leaned forward.
“Vanessa blamed Sarah for ruining her life.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Sarah barely knew her.””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s what made it so dangerous.””
She explained.
Years before I met Vanessa, Sarah had worked with her.
Vanessa wanted a promotion.
Sarah got it.
Vanessa believed Sarah stole the opportunity from her.
But according to Rachel, Sarah had actually defended Vanessa.
“She told management Vanessa deserved another chance.””
I stared.
“That doesn’t sound like someone she would hate.””
“No.””
Rachel looked down.
“That’s why Sarah never understood.””
A silence filled the table.
Then Rachel said something worse.
“Vanessa didn’t just hate Sarah.””
She looked directly at me.
“She wanted Sarah’s life.””
I thought about everything.
The way Vanessa dressed.
The way she decorated the house.
The way she copied Sarah’s recipes.
The way she insisted on keeping old family photos.
I had thought she was honoring my past.
Now I wondered if she was trying to replace it.
“Why me?””
Rachel answered immediately.
“Because you were Sarah’s husband.””
I felt sick.
“She married me because of Sarah?””
“Yes.””
“Then why Lily?””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“That’s the part I don’t understand.””
I looked at the documents again.
“She hated Sarah. Not Lily.””
Rachel was quiet.
Then she said:
“Maybe because Lily was the last piece of Sarah she couldn’t replace.””
The words hurt.
Because they made sense.
Vanessa couldn’t become Sarah.
Not completely.
Not while Lily existed.
My daughter was proof that someone else had been loved before Vanessa arrived.
I drove home feeling like my entire marriage had been built on a lie.
But when I opened the front door, I heard crying.
I froze.
“Lily?””
I ran upstairs.
She was sitting on her bed.
Holding something.
“What happened?””
She looked up.
“I found this.””
She handed me an old envelope.
My name was written on it.
But I didn’t recognize it.
“Where did you find it?””
“In Vanessa’s closet.””
Again.
Vanessa’s closet.
The place where secrets seemed to collect.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
From Sarah.
My hands started shaking.
A letter from my dead wife.
I read the first line.
“Michael, if anything happens to me, there is something you need to know.””
I stopped.
The room disappeared.
Sarah had written this before she died.
Before the accident.
Before Vanessa.
The letter continued.
“I found out someone has been following me.””
My breathing changed.
Lily watched me.
“Daddy?””
I couldn’t answer.
I kept reading.
“I think she is dangerous.””
My heart pounded.
“She knows things about our family that she shouldn’t know.””
Then the final sentence on the page made me drop the letter.
“Michael, do not trust the woman who comes after me.””
I stared.
Because Sarah had written this years before I met Vanessa.
Years before I knew her name.
I looked at Lily.
Then the letter.
Then the door.
And suddenly I wondered.
How many times had Vanessa been inside our lives before I noticed?
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
“Stop digging, Michael.””
Another message arrived.
A photo.
My blood turned cold.
It was a picture of Lily.
