Chapter 13: The Truth Behind The Accident
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Not even the person standing outside.
The house felt like it was holding its breath.
I looked through the window.
A shadow disappeared from the edge of the driveway.
“Who was that?”” I whispered.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She looked terrified.
Not the kind of fear she had shown when the police arrived.
Not the fear of being exposed.
This was different.
This was the fear of someone who knew danger was real.
“Michael,” she said quietly, “you need to get Lily out of here.””
I stared at her.
“You don’t get to give me orders.””
“I’m serious.””
“So am I.””
I stepped closer.
“You spent years hurting my daughter.””
Her face fell.
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
No excuses.
No anger.
Just two words.
“I know.””
I waited.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
I almost laughed.
“Wrong?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“You locked food away from a child.””
“I know.””
“You watched her through cameras.””
“I know.””
“You made her think she wasn’t loved.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
The room became silent.
Because for the first time, Vanessa wasn’t trying to win.
She was admitting she had lost.
But forgiveness was not something she could ask for.
Not yet.
Not after everything.
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked at me.
“The whole truth.””
She slowly sat down.
“After Sarah died, I thought I had lost everything.””
I frowned.
“Why would you say that?””
“Because I was obsessed with her.””
The honesty was disturbing.
“I wanted her life.””
She looked down.
“Her confidence. Her family. The way people loved her.””
I said nothing.
“And when she died…”
Her voice shook.
“I thought it was a sign.””
“A sign?””
“That I could finally have the things she had.””
My stomach turned.
“You mean me?””
She nodded.
“I found out about you before we met.””
I felt cold.
“How?””
“Daniel.””
Her brother.
“He had access to Sarah’s files.””
I stared.
“He helped you?””
“At first.””
The words came slowly.
“Then things changed.””
“What things?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Daniel didn’t want Sarah to succeed.””
“Why?””
“Because Sarah discovered what he was doing at work.””
Rachel had told me Vanessa hated Sarah.
But now another piece appeared.
Sarah had found something.
Something dangerous.
“What was he doing?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Fraud.””
The word landed heavily.
“Sarah was going to report him.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She knew.””
I stared.
“You protected him.””
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he was my brother.””
I shook my head.
“And Sarah died because of this?””
Vanessa looked up.
“I didn’t kill Sarah.””
I believed she believed that.
But belief wasn’t enough.
“What happened that night?””
Her hands trembled.
“Daniel followed her.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“To scare her.””
“Scare her?””
“Yes.””
She looked sick.
“He wanted the evidence she had.””
“And the crash?””
“He chased her.””
The room went silent.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know he would do that.””
I looked away.
For years, I had thought I lost Sarah because of random chance.
But someone had made a choice.
Someone had taken her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
“With what?””
She swallowed.
“He said if I talked, he would destroy everything.””
I looked at her.
“And you still married me?””
Her tears fell.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You thought you could replace Sarah.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The confession hurt.
Not because it surprised me.
Because it confirmed everything.
Then she said something unexpected.
“But Lily was never supposed to suffer.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“I hated that she reminded me of Sarah.””
Her voice broke.
“But I never wanted to hurt her.””
I remembered the locked refrigerator.
The notebook.
The camera.
I shook my head.
“Intent doesn’t erase damage.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I watched her answer.
A man’s voice came through.
Even from where I stood, I could hear the anger.
Vanessa turned pale.
“Daniel…”
My heart stopped.
She looked at me.
Then whispered:
“He knows you found out.””
A pause.
Then she dropped the phone.
“He’s coming here.””
The lights suddenly went out.
May you like
The entire house went dark.
And outside, a car door slammed.
