Chapter 9: The Man From My Past
The voice froze me.
Because I knew it.
Not from recent years.
Not from my daughter’s wedding.
From a lifetime ago.
A lifetime I had tried to forget.
James moved in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The man stepped inside.
He looked to be around my age.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
A face that carried years of regret.
Then he looked at me.
And smiled sadly.
“Hello, Margaret.””
My knees almost gave out.
Nobody had called me that way in years.
Not “Mom.””
Not “Mrs. Parker.””
Margaret.
The name from before my marriage.
Before my daughter.
Before everything.
Elaine whispered:
“His name is Daniel.””
I stared.
“No.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“You remember me.””
“I remember someone who disappeared.””
James looked between us.
“Mom?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because Daniel was right.
I remembered him.
The first man I ever loved.
The man I thought I would marry.
The man who vanished when I was pregnant.
“You left.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Twenty-five years ago.””
“Yes.””
“And now you show up?””
His voice was quiet.
“I didn’t come back for money.””
I laughed.
“Then why are you here?””
His expression became serious.
“Because Brielle is in danger.””
James frowned.
“From what?””
Daniel looked at the documents on the table.
“From the people who convinced her she needed to destroy her own mother.””
Elaine looked away.
“You’re blaming others?””
Daniel stared at her.
“I’m saying she was manipulated.””
I looked at him.
“You knew about this?””
He nodded.
“I knew Brielle found out about me.””
My heart tightened.
“You contacted her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because she deserved to know the truth.””
I shook my head.
“No. She deserved to hear it from me.””
“I agree.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid?””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Afraid you would hate me.””
I almost whispered.
“I already do.””
The words hurt him.
But he accepted them.
James picked up the documents.
“So what exactly happened?””
Daniel walked toward the table.
“Brielle found a letter from your husband.””
He pointed at the folder.
“He wrote it after discovering the truth.””
I looked down.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“And he stayed?””
Daniel nodded.
“Because he loved her.””
My eyes filled.
“Then why did he hide it?””
“Because he believed you were her mother first.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“He wanted Brielle to grow up knowing love, not biology.””
I touched the letter.
For the first time, I understood my husband’s choice.
He protected her.
Even from the truth.
But Brielle had done the opposite.
She had used the truth as a weapon.
James asked:
“Then why the house?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because someone told Brielle that if she exposed the secret, she could force you to give her everything.””
My stomach turned.
“Who?””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward Elaine.
Then toward Richard.
Finally, he said:
“The person who created this entire plan wasn’t Brielle.””
Nobody breathed.
“Then who was it?””
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small recording device.
“I have proof.””
James stepped forward.
“Proof of what?””
Daniel pressed play.
A familiar voice filled the room.
A voice I never expected to hear.
A voice that made Brielle’s entire plan finally make sense.
“Once Margaret signs the papers, the house is ours.””
I covered my mouth.
Because the voice belonged to someone I trusted.
And then the recording continued.
“If Brielle doesn’t cooperate, we’ll tell her the truth about her real father.””
The device clicked off.
James stared.
“Who said that?””
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your daughter’s wedding planner.””
