Chapter 11: The File In Claire’s Office

The file was waiting for us in a locked office behind the ballroom.

The same ballroom where my daughter had humiliated me less than twenty-four hours earlier.

The same room where everyone had watched me lose my dignity.

Now I walked through those doors carrying something different.

Not shame.

Determination.

The hotel manager, a nervous man named Thomas, stood beside the desk.

“I’m sorry this happened at our venue.””

I looked at him.

“This isn’t your fault.””

He nodded.

“But we should have noticed something.””

James opened the file.

“What exactly did you find?””

Thomas hesitated.

“After the wedding ended, our staff found this hidden behind a cabinet.””

He pointed.

“It had Claire’s name on it.””

I looked inside.

The first page made my hands go cold.

My name.

My address.

My medical history.

My property value.

Every private detail about my life.

Someone had created a file about me.

Not as a mother.

Not as a person.

As an asset.

James turned pages quickly.

“She had everything.””

The attorney beside us examined the documents.

“She collected information for months.””

I looked at the dates.

The earliest document was from seven months ago.

Seven months.

Almost exactly when my cancer treatment started.

I whispered:

“She knew before Brielle did.””

Everyone looked at me.

“What?””

I touched the page.

“Claire knew I was sick before my daughter.””

James looked furious.

“Why?””

I couldn’t answer.

Then I saw something.

A note attached to the back.

Handwritten.

Not Claire’s handwriting.

Someone else’s.

The note said:

Brielle is emotional. Keep reminding her that Margaret will leave everything to her eventually.

My heart broke.

Because I knew exactly what that meant.

They had used my daughter’s fear.

Her insecurity.

Her desperation.

They had turned it into a weapon.

James read the note.

His face changed.

“She manipulated her.””

The attorney nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at the file.

“Where is Claire now?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“She left.””

“When?””

“Immediately after the wedding.””

James laughed bitterly.

“Of course she did.””

Then the attorney found something else.

A bank statement.

He looked at it carefully.

“Wait.””

“What?””

He turned the paper around.

“There are payments.””

James leaned closer.

“From who?””

The attorney pointed.

“Brielle.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

He looked at the amount.

“Thirty thousand dollars.””

Silence.

My daughter had paid her.

I didn’t know whether to feel angry or sad anymore.

James closed his eyes.

“She paid someone to destroy her own mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I picked up the statement.

“She paid someone because she was afraid.””

James looked at me.

“Mom…”

“I’m not defending her.””

I looked at the document.

“But fear doesn’t excuse cruelty.””

The words surprised me.

Because they were true.

I still loved my daughter.

But love didn’t mean pretending she hadn’t hurt me.

My phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t unknown.

Brielle.

I stared at the screen.

James looked at me.

“Do you want me to answer?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pressed the button.

“Brielle.””

Her breathing was shaky.

“Mom.””

I said nothing.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Claire lied to me.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did she tell you?””

“She said if I didn’t get the house, someone else would.””

“Who?””

Brielle started crying.

“She said the man who raised me wasn’t my real father.””

My heart stopped.

“She said…”

Her voice broke.

“She said my biological father was coming back to take everything.””

I looked at James.

Then Daniel.

“Brielle, where are you?””

Silence.

Too long.

“Brielle?””

Finally she whispered:

“I’m with him.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

The answer came quietly.

May you like

“The man Claire said was my real father.””

The call ended.
