Chapter 13: The Final Betrayal

The sight of Claire standing beside my daughter made my heart sink.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the documents.

After discovering how carefully someone had manipulated Brielle’s fears.

She was still there.

Still controlling the situation.

Still holding the folder.

James stepped away from the window.

“I’m calling the police.””

Victor stopped him.

“Not yet.””

James looked at him sharply.

“Why?””

“Because Claire wants a reaction.””

I looked at Victor.

“You know her?””

Victor nodded.

“She worked with my company years ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Your company?””

“Yes.””

He looked toward the window.

“She was never just a wedding planner.””

The front door opened.

Brielle walked in first.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes immediately found mine.

“Mom.””

I didn’t answer.

Claire entered behind her.

Still perfectly dressed.

Still calm.

Still wearing the same polite smile she had worn at my daughter’s wedding.

“Margaret.””

I felt something inside me harden.

“Don’t say my name like you care.””

Her smile disappeared for half a second.

Then returned.

“I understand why you’re angry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

Claire looked at the documents on the table.

“I think you’re misunderstanding what happened.””

James laughed.

“Is that what you’re going with?””

Claire ignored him.

She looked at Brielle.

“I told you this would happen.””

Brielle flinched.

“What?””

“I told you your mother would turn everyone against you.””

My daughter looked confused.

“You said she would never forgive me.””

Claire stepped closer.

“She won’t.””

The words hit me.

Because Claire wasn’t comforting her.

She was controlling her.

Again.

“Brielle,” I said quietly.

She looked at me.

“Did she tell you that?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

I looked at Claire.

“You made her afraid of me.””

Claire shrugged.

“I showed her reality.””

“No.””

I pointed at the folder.

“You showed her a fantasy where destroying me would save her.””

Claire’s expression changed.

For the first time, her confidence slipped.

James noticed.

“You know you’re in trouble, right?””

Claire smiled.

“You think you have proof?””

She lifted the folder.

“I have proof too.””

My heart tightened.

“What proof?””

She looked at Brielle.

“Tell them.””

Brielle went pale.

“No.””

“Tell them what you found.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What did you find?””

Brielle looked down.

“I found Dad’s letter.””

My breath caught.

“You mean the letter your father wrote?””

She nodded.

“I thought it was about the house.””

“And?””

She started crying.

“It wasn’t.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Brielle.””

“No.””

My daughter stepped back.

“I’m done.””

Everyone became silent.

Brielle looked at me.

“I found the letter months ago.””

The confession hurt.

Months.

She had known.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“About Victor?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was angry.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought you lied to me my whole life.””

I whispered:

“I didn’t know.””

“I know that now.””

She looked at Claire.

“But she told me you knew.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“She manipulated everything,” Brielle continued.

“She told me my entire childhood was fake.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Brielle…”

“I believed her.””

The room was silent.

Then Claire stepped forward.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Brielle looked at her.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You made me hate my own mother.””

Claire laughed softly.

“You think she forgives you?””

Brielle looked at me.

I saw fear in her eyes.

The fear of losing me.

The fear she had carried for months.

I walked toward her.

Slowly.

“You hurt me.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“You broke my trust.””

“I know.””

“You embarrassed me.””

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I know.””

I stopped in front of her.

“But you’re still my daughter.””

She cried.

And for the first time in months, she reached for me.

I didn’t immediately hug her.

Because forgiveness wasn’t something that erased pain.

But after a moment…

I held her.

Behind us, Claire stepped backward.

Quietly.

Trying to leave.

James noticed.

“Not so fast.””

Claire stopped.

The attorney moved toward the door.

“You’re not leaving.””

Claire smiled.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.””

Victor looked at her.

“Yes.””

His voice was cold.

“We do.””

Claire looked at him.

And for the first time…

She looked afraid.

Because Victor wasn’t looking at her like a stranger.

He was looking at her like someone who knew exactly what she had done.

“I know where the money came from,” Victor said.

Claire froze.

“What?””

“The payments.””

Nobody moved.

Victor continued:

“You didn’t just take money from Brielle.””

May you like

Claire’s face went pale.

“You stole from me.””
