Chapter 8: The Secret Between Sisters

I couldn’t speak.

The photograph sat between us like a bomb waiting to explode.

My husband.

My sister.

Together.

A picture I had never seen.

A moment I never knew existed.

James picked it up carefully.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t take my eyes off Elaine.

“Explain.””

Elaine wiped her tears.

“I loved him.””

The room became silent.

My heart felt strangely empty.

Not broken.

Not yet.

Just empty.

Because there were some betrayals too large to understand all at once.

“You loved my husband?””

Elaine nodded.

“Before you married him.””

I stared at her.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

“Then why were you at our wedding?””

She looked down.

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“I thought I could watch my sister be happy and move on.””

My hands shook.

“You never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because you were my sister.””

The answer confused me.

She looked up.

“I loved him first. But you were the person I loved most.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“And twenty years later, you helped my daughter steal my house.””

Elaine closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Why?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because I found out something.””

“What?””

“That he left something behind.””

My heart stopped.

“My husband?””

She nodded.

“Your husband knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Brielle wasn’t his biological daughter.””

The room went completely still.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“No.””

Elaine looked at me sadly.

“You knew.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“You suspected.””

“No.””

The memory came before I could stop it.

The hospital years ago.

The argument.

My husband asking why Brielle’s blood type didn’t match.

The test we never completed.

The conversation we buried.

I had pushed it away.

I had chosen not to know.

Elaine whispered:

“He found out before he died.””

My voice was barely audible.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because Brielle found out.””

James looked shocked.

“What?””

Elaine nodded.

“She found the old documents.””

I turned toward the stairs.

The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.

“My daughter knew?””

“She knew for months.””

My chest tightened.

“Then all of this…”

Elaine nodded.

“Wasn’t only about the house.””

James looked confused.

“What else was it about?””

Elaine reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a folder.

“She wanted the documents hidden.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a letter.

A letter from my late husband.

My hands trembled as I read the first line.

If Brielle ever discovers the truth, I hope she knows one thing…

I stopped.

I couldn’t continue.

James took the paper gently.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

“It says your husband knew.””

I whispered:

“Knew what?””

James swallowed.

“That Brielle was not his daughter.””

The words felt like a physical blow.

I sat down.

All these years.

All the memories.

All the love.

Everything I believed.

Elaine sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Did Brielle know who her father was?””

Elaine hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Who?””

Elaine’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know if I should tell you.””

“Tell me.””

She looked at the photograph again.

Then she whispered:

“The man who could destroy everything was never far away.””

James frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Elaine looked toward the front door.

And before she answered, someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Elaine went pale.

“No.””

I stood.

“Who is it?””

She whispered:

“The man Brielle has been meeting.””

The door opened slightly.

May you like

And a familiar voice called from outside.

“Is she finally ready to hear the truth?””
