Chapter 4: The Letter I Never Wrote

The envelope felt heavier than paper should have felt.

I held it between my fingers, staring at my own handwriting on the front.

My name.

My letters.

My familiar slant.

But I had never written it.

The ballroom had gone completely quiet.

Two hundred guests watched as James stood beside me, his face filled with confusion.

“Mom,” he whispered.

“Open it.””

I looked at Richard.

“You said I wrote this.””

Richard shook his head slowly.

“No. I said it looked like your handwriting.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why do you have it?””

He looked at Brielle.

And for the first time since I met him, Richard looked ashamed.

“Because I found it in my office three weeks ago.””

Brielle’s expression changed.

“Dad, don’t.””

James immediately noticed.

“Don’t what?””

She stepped forward.

“Don’t make this worse.””

James stared at his wife.

“Worse?””

His voice was quiet.

That was when I realized he was past anger.

He was hurt.

Deeply hurt.

Richard opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Finally, he said, “I received several documents from Brielle. She asked me to witness them.””

“And you did?”” James asked.

“I thought they were legal papers between mother and daughter.””

Richard looked at me.

“I didn’t know she planned to transfer the house.””

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“What made you question it?””

Richard glanced at the paper in my hands.

“This.””

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a single sheet.

The moment I saw the first line, my heart stopped.

“Dear Brielle…”

My daughter looked down.

I read further.

“I know you are worried about my health. I know you want to make sure everything is handled properly. I trust you to manage my affairs if something happens to me.””

My vision blurred.

Those words sounded like me.

They sounded like something I would say.

Because I loved her.

Because I trusted her.

But I had never written them.

I looked up.

“This is fake.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice became stronger.

“I never wrote this.””

She crossed her arms.

“You don’t remember everything you do anymore.””

The cruelty of the sentence cut deeper than the accusation.

James looked at her.

“Are you saying your mother is confused?””

“I’m saying she was sick.””

“I was sick,” I interrupted.

Everyone looked at me.

“I had cancer. That does not mean I lost my mind.””

The room remained silent.

I folded the letter carefully.

Then I noticed something.

At the bottom.

A signature.

My signature.

A perfect copy.

But underneath it was a tiny mistake.

A mistake only I would notice.

“My signature is wrong.””

Brielle frowned.

“What?””

I pointed.

“My real signature always has a small line underneath the first letter.””

I touched the page.

“This one doesn’t.””

James took the paper.

He studied it.

Then he looked at Brielle.

“You forged her signature.””

“No!””

Her voice echoed across the room.

A few guests flinched.

“I didn’t forge anything!””

“Then explain it.””

“I can’t.””

The answer came out softer.

Everyone heard it.

James stepped back.

“You can’t?””

Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect us.””

“Us?””

She nodded.

“Our future.””

James looked disgusted.

“Our future built on your mother losing everything?””

Brielle looked at me.

“You had no one else.””

The words stunned me.

“No one else?””

She shook her head.

“You always said I was your only family.””

I stared at her.

“I said you were my daughter.””

“And that meant everything should come to me.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the house.

Not because of the documents.

Because my daughter had turned my love into a contract.

James took my hand.

“Mom, we’re leaving.””

Brielle grabbed his arm.

“James, wait.””

He pulled away.

“No.””

“But we’re married.””

He looked at the ring on his finger.

Then at hers.

“Today was supposed to be the day I married the woman I loved.””

His eyes filled with disappointment.

“I don’t know who I married anymore.””

Brielle started crying.

“James…”

Before he could answer, Richard’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

“What?”” James asked.

Richard didn’t respond.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched him listen.

Then his expression changed.

“No. That’s impossible.””

A pause.

Then:

“When?””

James moved closer.

“Dad?””

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s the hospital.””

My heart froze.

“The hospital?””

Richard looked at me.

“They said someone requested your medical records six months ago.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Brielle.

“She did.””

Brielle’s face went white.

May you like

And then she whispered the words that made everyone turn toward her.

“I wasn’t the only one involved.””
