Chapter 8: The Detective Who Destroyed My Life

For three years, I imagined the moment I would see Harold Mills again.

In my imagination, I was stronger.

I would walk into a courtroom.

I would point at him.

I would expose everything.

But standing there on my father’s porch, staring at the man who took three years from me, I realized something.

Justice didn’t always arrive with cameras and applause.

Sometimes it arrived quietly.

Standing ten feet away.

Smiling.

“You look surprised,” Mills said.

I stared at him.

“You’re supposed to be retired.””

He laughed.

“People believe whatever story they’re told.””

I stepped onto the porch.

“You helped put me in prison.””

Diane looked between us.

“Ryan—”

I ignored her.

Mills tilted his head.

“Did your brother tell you everything?””

The question made my blood run cold.

“You knew about Ethan.””

“I knew a lot of things.””

“Like what?””

He smiled.

“Like how desperate your father was.””

I moved forward.

Michael shouted from across the street.

“Ryan!””

Mills noticed him.

Then smiled wider.

“So Michael finally decided to stop protecting Thomas’s secrets.””

I froze.

“Everyone knew.””

Mills looked at me.

“Your father built his entire life around hiding problems.””

“My father protected his family.””

“No.””

Mills stepped closer.

“Your father created monsters and then acted surprised when they came back.””

I wanted to hit him.

Every part of me wanted to.

But prison taught me control.

So I asked the only question that mattered.

“Did you kill him?””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

“You should be careful with accusations.””

“Answer me.””

Diane looked at Mills.

And something passed between them.

A silent conversation.

A warning.

Mills noticed I saw it.

“You really think you understand what happened?””

“Yes.””

“No, Ryan.””

He stepped closer.

“You understand the version your father wanted you to understand.””

I looked at Diane.

Then back at him.

“Where is the safe?””

Mills laughed.

“You found out.””

Diane whispered:

“Harold.””

He ignored her.

“You really are Thomas’s son.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you keep searching for answers even when the truth destroys you.””

I held up the key.

“This opens the safe.””

Mills’ face changed.

A small movement.

But enough.

He knew exactly what it was.

“You shouldn’t have that.””

“Why?””

“Because your father was supposed to destroy it.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What was inside?””

Mills looked at Diane.

Then back at me.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

His expression became cold.

“Proof that your father wasn’t the victim you think he was.””

I shook my head.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

He pointed toward the house.

“Ask yourself why Thomas hid everything from you.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I had asked myself the same question.

Why didn’t my father tell me?

Why did I have to discover everything after he died?

Mills continued.

“Your father knew the truth about Ethan.””

“He protected him.””

“No.””

Mills leaned closer.

“He protected you from knowing what Ethan did.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What did Ethan do?””

Mills smiled.

“Ask your brother.””

I turned.

Ethan stood near the street.

His face was pale.

He had heard everything.

“Mills,” Ethan said.

The detective smiled.

“Still alive after all these years.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about him.””

Mills laughed.

“You’re defending your father now?””

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

“You know what you did.””

“And you know what you did.””

The two men stared at each other.

Years of hatred between them.

I looked at Ethan.

“What is he talking about?””

Neither answered.

Then Mills pulled something from his coat.

A small envelope.

He threw it toward me.

It landed at my feet.

“Read that.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“The last thing your father wrote before he died.””

My heart stopped.

Michael stepped forward.

“Ryan, don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Because he looked terrified.

Not of Mills.

Of the paper.

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

My father’s handwriting.

Only one sentence.

I found out why Ethan betrayed Ryan.

My hands shook.

May you like

Then I read the line beneath it.

And everything I believed about my brother changed.
