Chapter 6: The Truth Behind My Arrest

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to believe every word coming out of his mouth was another lie.

But the hardest part was looking at him.

Because he was still my brother.

The same person who taught me how to swim.

The same person who used to sneak me extra dessert when our parents weren’t looking.

The same person I cried over when I thought I lost him.

And now he was standing in front of me telling me he destroyed my life.

“You don’t get to say you saved me,” I whispered.

Ethan looked down.

“I know.””

“You disappeared.””

“I had to.””

“You let Dad believe you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

I laughed.

“No choice?””

Michael stepped between us.

“Ryan, listen to him.””

I looked at Michael.

“You knew too?””

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt endless.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

I turned back to Ethan.

“Start talking.””

He nodded slowly.

“Three years ago, I found out Diane was stealing from Dad.””

I crossed my arms.

“And?””

“She wasn’t doing it alone.””

“Who was helping her?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

“Detective Mills.””

The same name from my father’s list.

My stomach tightened.

“He was a police officer.””

“He was also corrupt.””

Ethan walked toward the table and opened a folder.

“Diane and Mills were moving money through fake accounts. Dad found out.””

“Why didn’t he go to the police?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because Mills was the police.””

The answer was simple.

Terrifying.

My father had nowhere to turn.

“So what does that have to do with me?””

Ethan was quiet.

Then he said:

“They needed someone to blame.””

I felt cold.

“No.””

“Ryan—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“You’re telling me you framed me?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“I made sure the evidence pointed toward you.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I remembered the trial.

The accusations.

My mother’s old friends refusing to look at me.

The judge saying my future was in my own hands.

All because my own brother moved pieces around a board.

“Why?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Because Diane threatened Dad.””

“With what?””

“With you.””

I froze.

“She told him if he exposed her, she would make sure you spent your life in prison.””

I stared.

“And Dad believed that?””

“He believed she had enough power to do it.””

“So he sacrificed me?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“He sacrificed himself.””

I looked away.

“What does that mean?””

“Dad spent three years collecting evidence.””

Michael added quietly, “He knew he couldn’t fight Diane directly.””

Ethan continued.

“He wanted you safe after you got out.””

I looked at the files.

The house.

The company.

The documents.

My father had prepared everything.

“But he died.””

The room became quiet.

Then Ethan said:

“Because Diane found out he was close to exposing her.””

I looked at him.

“You’re saying she killed Dad?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

A noise came from outside.

A vehicle.

Michael looked toward the window.

“We have to go.””

I grabbed the files.

“No.””

“Ryan.””

“I’m done running.””

Michael stared at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, I understand perfectly.””

I looked at Ethan.

“My whole life, people made choices for me.””

I picked up the folder.

“My father.””

“My brother.””

“My stepmother.””

“I’m making one now.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan walked closer.

“There’s one thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled a small key from his pocket.

“This opens your father’s final safe.””

I took it.

“Where is it?””

Ethan looked toward the door.

“Under the house.””

My heart stopped.

“The house Diane stole from me?””

He nodded.

“Your father hid the last piece of evidence there.””

“What evidence?””

Ethan looked terrified.

“The evidence that proves who really killed him.””

A phone buzzed.

Not Michael’s.

Not Ethan’s.

Mine.

I looked at the screen.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

My father standing outside our house.

Taken the day he died.

And beneath it were six words.

*Your father knew you would come home.*
