Chapter 5: The Brother Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

I didn’t drive.

Michael did.

For twenty minutes, we moved through town without speaking.

The message on his phone stayed in my mind.

The next person buried at Oak Hill won’t be a secret.

Someone wanted me afraid.

Someone wanted me to stop.

But fear was something I understood.

Prison teaches you many things.

One of them is that people who control you rely on one weapon more than anything else.

Isolation.

They make you believe you have nobody.

They make you believe the truth is too dangerous to chase.

But my father spent his final days chasing it.

I wasn’t going to stop.

Michael pulled into an abandoned warehouse near the edge of town.

I looked around.

“What is this place?””

“Your father used it.””

“For what?””

“To store things he couldn’t keep at home.””

We walked inside.

Dust covered everything.

Old boxes were stacked against the walls.

Michael unlocked a metal cabinet hidden behind a wooden shelf.

Inside were dozens of files.

My father’s investigation.

I grabbed the nearest folder.

The first page was dated two years before his death.

The title read:

Ethan Walker.

I looked at Michael.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Your father told me.””

“Told you what?””

“That Ethan wasn’t dead.””

The words hit me harder than anything Diane had said.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Ryan—”

“My brother died.””

Michael looked away.

“Your father discovered the accident report had been altered.””

I opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Police reports.

Medical records.

My hands trembled.

“There was no body?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Michael rubbed his face.

“The funeral was closed casket.””

I remembered.

The endless line of people.

My father standing beside the coffin.

His face empty.

I was seventeen.

Too young to understand.

Too hurt to ask questions.

“He let me believe my brother was dead.””

“Because he was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Michael looked at the file.

“From Ethan.””

I couldn’t speak.

My own brother.

The person who taught me how to throw a baseball.

The person who carried me home when I broke my leg.

The person my father cried over for years.

Alive.

And somehow connected to my arrest.

“That makes no sense.””

Michael opened another document.

“This is why your father started investigating.””

The page contained bank records.

Payments.

Transfers.

All leading to one account.

The account belonged to Ethan Walker.

I felt sick.

“My brother was paying people?””

“Your father believed so.””

“Why?””

Michael shook his head.

“We never found out.””

I looked at the files spread across the table.

My entire life felt like a story someone else had written.

My brother wasn’t dead.

My stepmother was lying.

My father knew.

And I had spent three years locked away while everyone around me kept secrets.

A sound echoed from outside.

A car door closing.

Michael immediately shut the folder.

“Someone’s here.””

I looked toward the warehouse entrance.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

The footsteps got closer.

Slow.

Confident.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older than I remembered.

But impossible to mistake.

My blood turned cold.

Because I had seen that face every day growing up.

“Ryan.””

I couldn’t move.

The man smiled sadly.

“I know this is a lot to process.””

My mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Michael stepped in front of me.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man looked at him.

“Still protecting him, Michael?””

My hands curled into fists.

“Ethan?””

My brother looked at me.

The brother I buried in my mind years ago.

The brother my father mourned.

The brother who was supposed to be gone.

“Yes,” he said softly.

“I’m alive.””

I felt anger replace shock.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

Why did you leave?

Why did you let Dad suffer?

Why did I go to prison?

But before I could ask, Ethan looked at Michael.

“You didn’t tell him the worst part.””

Michael said nothing.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Your father wasn’t investigating Diane because he thought she betrayed him.””

I stared at him.

“Then why?””

Ethan looked directly into my eyes.

“Because he discovered I was the one who put you in prison.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

“No.””

Ethan’s face filled with regret.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

“Why would you do that?””

His eyes lowered.

May you like

And then he said something I never expected.

“Because I was trying to save you.””
