Chapter 13: The Truth My Family Buried
Ethan looked smaller in the hospital bed.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not weaker.
Not broken.
Just smaller.
The person who had carried so many secrets for so many years was lying beneath a thin white blanket, connected to machines that measured every breath he took.
When I walked into the room, his eyes opened.
“Ryan.””
His voice was barely a whisper.
I stood beside the bed.
“You wanted to talk.””
He nodded.
“I don’t have much time.””
I looked at the heart monitor.
“Don’t say that.””
He gave a tired smile.
“You always hated when people told you the truth.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, I pulled a chair closer.
“Tell me everything.””
Ethan stared at the ceiling.
“Before I do, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“I didn’t betray you because I wanted to hurt you.””
I looked away.
“I know.””
He looked surprised.
“I’m not saying I forgive you.””
His expression softened.
“I know.””
I sat quietly.
For the first time in years, we were just brothers.
Not enemies.
Not suspects.
Not people connected by secrets.
Just brothers.
“Dad found out something about Mom,” Ethan said.
I looked at him.
“My mother?””
He nodded.
“Something nobody wanted you to know.””
Michael’s photograph flashed in my mind.
My mother standing beside Harold Mills.
The note.
The lie.
“What was it?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Mom didn’t die in an accident.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
“She was killed.””
The room seemed to disappear.
I heard the machines.
The footsteps outside.
The voices in the hallway.
But everything felt far away.
“Who?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Harold Mills.””
I stood.
“No.””
“Ryan—”
“No.””
I paced the room.
“My mother died when I was six.””
“I know.””
“Dad told me it was an accident.””
“He lied.””
I stopped.
The word hurt.
My father.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
Another lie.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
Everyone said that.
Protect you.
Protect you.
But all those protections left me standing in the dark.
“Tell me the truth.””
Ethan nodded.
“Mom discovered Mills was laundering money through Dad’s company.””
I listened.
“She threatened to expose him.””
“And he killed her.””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“But why did Dad stay silent?””
“Because Mills threatened you.””
I stared.
“Me?””
Ethan nodded.
“Dad had two choices. Fight publicly and risk losing both of us, or stay quiet and gather enough evidence to destroy Mills completely.””
“And he chose silence.””
“He chose patience.””
I looked at the floor.
My father spent years carrying a secret that destroyed him.
“Then why did Mills come after me?””
Ethan’s eyes darkened.
“Because Dad got too close.””
The answer came slowly.
“Your arrest wasn’t random.””
I already knew.
But hearing it still hurt.
“Mills wanted Dad to stop investigating.””
“How did I become the target?””
Ethan looked away.
“I helped him.””
I swallowed.
“Why?””
“Because I was trying to get close to Mills.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
He coughed.
I waited until he recovered.
“Dad and I created a plan.””
“What plan?””
“We needed Mills to believe we were fighting.””
Ethan looked at me.
“He needed to think the family was falling apart.””
My chest tightened.
“So you became the enemy.””
“Yes.””
“You let me hate you.””
“Yes.””
“You let me go to prison.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But somehow, it hurt less than another lie.
“Why didn’t Dad tell me?””
“Because he knew you would come after us.””
He smiled sadly.
“You always did that.””
I looked away.
“You were reckless.””
“I was loyal.””
“You were angry.””
“Both can be true.””
For the first time, Ethan smiled.
A real smile.
Then his face became serious.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“The person who poisoned Dad.””
I leaned forward.
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
Then lowered his voice.
“It wasn’t Diane.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
He looked directly at me.
“Michael.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“No.””
“Ryan.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You’re wrong.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I wanted to believe I was wrong too.””
I stood up.
“My father trusted Michael.””
“Yes.””
“They were best friends.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Because Michael knew everything.””
Before I could respond, the door opened.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Visiting hours are over.””
I looked back at Ethan.
He grabbed my wrist.
“Ryan.””
I looked down.
“Don’t trust anyone who says they’re protecting you.””
May you like
His grip weakened.
“Especially him.””
