Chapter 14: The Last Recording

I found Michael outside the hospital.

He was sitting alone on a bench beneath the parking lot lights.

Like he had been waiting.

Like he knew I would come.

“You knew.””

He looked up.

The sadness on his face told me everything.

“Ethan told you.””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Michael looked away.

“I hoped you would never find out.””

The words were almost worse than a confession.

“You poisoned my father.””

He closed his eyes.

“I didn’t want to.””

I laughed.

“You didn’t want to?””

My voice echoed through the empty parking lot.

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“Because of you.””

Michael looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

Deep, painful regret.

“Your father was going to expose everything.””

“So?””

“So Mills would have killed you.””

I shook my head.

“You all keep using me as an excuse.””

Michael stood.

“I was trying to save you.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

The anger came out.

“You were trying to control what happened to me.””

Michael said nothing.

Because he knew I was right.

“Why poison him?””

His face collapsed.

“I didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I didn’t poison Thomas.””

“Then why did Ethan say—”

“Because Ethan doesn’t know everything.””

Michael reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“Your father gave me this.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“The truth.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you show me before?””

“Because Thomas asked me not to.””

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Another secret.

Another promise.

Michael pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the night.

“Michael, if you’re listening to this, it means I was right.””

I stopped breathing.

My father sounded tired.

Older.

But calm.

“I know someone close to me is involved.””

A pause.

“I know Diane took money.””

Another pause.

“I know Harold Mills corrupted the investigation.””

My hands tightened.

“But Michael…”

The recording became quieter.

“If you are the one listening to this because something happened to me, then I need you to understand.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked away.

“You were never the person I feared.””

My heart stopped.

The recording continued.

“The person I feared was the person who would use my trust against my family.””

A long silence.

Then my father said:

“Michael, I know what you did.””

I looked up.

Michael’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

The recording continued.

“I know you helped Mills.””

My blood went cold.

Michael whispered:

“No.””

My father’s voice continued.

“But I also know why.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Michael.

He was crying.

Not pretending.

Actually crying.

“Explain.””

He sat down.

“I was working undercover.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Thomas knew.””

“Then why did he accuse you?””

“He didn’t.””

I looked at the recorder.

The missing piece.

The thing my father never finished.

Michael continued.

“Mills thought I was helping him.””

“You were helping Dad.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Ethan think you killed him?””

“Because Ethan only saw part of the truth.””

I shook my head.

“This family has more secrets than answers.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another envelope.

“This was the final thing your father left.””

I took it.

My name was written on the front.

Ryan.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

Ryan,

If you have reached this point, you know everyone lied to you.

But there is one final truth.

I read the next line.

The person who poisoned me was not trying to kill me.

They were trying to stop me from revealing who really controls Harold Mills.

I looked at Michael.

Then continued.

That person is someone you have trusted your entire life.

My hands shook.

May you like

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

Ryan, the person who destroyed our family is still inside it.
