Chapter 7: The Secret In The Medical Files
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
I sat in the back seat of my mother's car, holding the phone against my ear, trying to understand what Daniel had just told me.
The reason I was born without arms may not be what everyone told us.
Those words kept repeating in my mind.
My whole life had been built around one fact.
I was born this way.
There was never a villain.
Never a mystery.
Never a question.
Just acceptance.
But now, suddenly, there was a question.
And I hated that part of me wanted an answer.
"What did you find?"" I asked.
Daniel exhaled.
"I found documents from the hospital where you were born.""
My mother immediately shook her head.
"Maya, don't do this right now.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Because sometimes the truth doesn't fix anything.""
I stared at her.
"Maybe not knowing hurts more.""
She looked away.
That was when I realized something.
My mother wasn't angry.
She was scared.
Not for herself.
For me.
Daniel continued.
"After I left, I spent years trying to understand what happened. I thought I was looking for an excuse.""
His voice cracked.
"But then I found something strange.""
"What?""
"The hospital records from your birth had been changed.""
Dr. Carter suddenly stood.
"What did you say?""
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel heard her through the phone.
"Emily?""
Dr. Carter stepped closer.
"Daniel Collins?""
The silence that followed told me everything.
They knew each other.
I looked between them.
"You two have met before?""
Neither answered.
That scared me.
"Mom?""
She closed her eyes.
"Maya...""
"No.""
My voice became firmer.
"I need everyone to stop protecting me and start telling me the truth.""
Nobody argued.
Finally, Dr. Carter sat beside me.
"When you were born, there were complications.""
I listened carefully.
"Your mother was very sick during pregnancy.""
My mother nodded.
"I remember.""
Dr. Carter continued.
"But the doctors documented everything.""
She opened the old folder.
"The original records showed several concerns about medication exposure and hospital procedures.""
My stomach tightened.
"Medication?""
She nodded.
"But those pages disappeared.""
The car suddenly felt too small.
"Disappeared?""
"Yes.""
Daniel spoke through the phone.
"I found copies from an old legal archive.""
My mother looked at him.
"You knew?""
"I found them recently.""
"And you didn't tell me?""
Daniel was quiet.
"I wasn't sure if I was right.""
I looked at both of them.
Two people who had carried pieces of my story without me knowing.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I didn't want you growing up believing you were a mistake.""
That sentence hurt.
Because suddenly I understood.
She wasn't hiding the truth because she was ashamed of me.
She was hiding it because she loved me.
But love could still hurt.
"Mom...""
She reached for my hand.
"I watched people look at you and see what you didn't have.""
Her voice shook.
"I spent years making sure you never saw yourself that way.""
I squeezed her fingers.
"But now I need to know.""
She nodded slowly.
"I know.""
Dr. Carter looked at the folder.
"There is one more thing.""
My heart dropped.
"What?""
She pulled out another document.
"This was attached to the original file.""
She handed it to me.
I read the first line.
Patient: Maya Collins.
Then the next sentence.
My hands went cold.
"Additional review recommended due to suspected procedural error.""
I looked up.
"Procedural error?""
Dr. Carter nodded.
"Someone at the hospital believed something had gone wrong.""
The phone was silent.
Then Daniel said:
"Maya, I found the doctor who signed that report.""
I looked at the name.
A name I didn't recognize.
"What happened to him?""
Daniel answered.
"He disappeared from medicine shortly after your birth.""
The silence returned.
Then another notification appeared on my phone.
An email.
From an unknown sender.
