Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Score

The judge looked across the arena.

"Brittany Hayes, please step forward.""

A nervous expression crossed Brittany's face.

She slowly walked toward the judges.

The crowd became restless.

I stood beside Coach Sarah, confused.

"What is happening?"" I whispered.

She watched Brittany carefully.

"I don't know.""

The judge held the paper in her hands.

"Brittany, before today's competition, officials received a complaint regarding comments made toward another athlete.""

Brittany's face changed.

Her teammates looked at the floor.

The judge continued.

"This competition is built on skill, discipline, and respect.""

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then the judge looked toward me.

"Maya, your performance today showed extraordinary ability.""

The crowd applauded again.

But the judge wasn't finished.

"We also want to make clear that every athlete who steps onto this floor has earned the right to be here.""

My eyes lowered.

I wasn't expecting those words to affect me so much.

Because for years, I had fought to prove I belonged.

And hearing someone else finally say it felt different.

Brittany looked uncomfortable.

For the first time, she didn't look confident.

She looked young.

Just another seventeen-year-old girl who had made a mistake.

After the ceremony, I walked toward the hallway behind the arena.

I needed a quiet moment.

My legs were tired.

My heart was still racing.

I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes.

Then I heard footsteps.

"Maya.""

I opened my eyes.

Brittany stood there.

Alone.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she looked down.

"I owe you an apology.""

I didn't answer immediately.

She continued.

"What I said was cruel.""

I crossed my arms.

"Why did you say it?""

She looked surprised by the question.

Then she sighed.

"Because I was scared.""

I frowned.

"Scared of me?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

She looked back toward the arena.

"Scared that someone would come in and change everything I thought I knew.""

That wasn't the answer I expected.

Brittany swallowed.

"I saw you before the competition and thought, 'If she can do this, then maybe I have no excuse when I fail.''"

I stared at her.

"You made fun of me because you were afraid?""

She nodded.

"I guess.""

For the first time all day, I didn't know what to say.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

It was a message from Coach Sarah.

But it wasn't about my score.

It was a picture.

A newspaper article.

My hands went still.

The headline read:

"Teen Gymnast Without Arms Inspires Nation — But Her Story Has A Secret Nobody Knew.""

I looked at the screen.

A second message appeared.

"Call me immediately. There is something about your past you need to know.""

I looked up at Brittany.

She noticed my expression.

"What happened?""

I stared at the message.

May you like

Because suddenly, the biggest surprise of my life wasn't what happened on the competition floor.

It was what someone had just discovered about the day I was born.
