Chapter 10: The Betrayal I Never Expected

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

My coach.

The woman who told me to believe in myself.

The woman who stood between me and every person who doubted me.

The woman who had spent years saying, "Look at your floor.""

Coach Sarah.

No.

It didn't make sense.

"You're lying," I whispered.

Dr. Vale looked at me with sadness.

"I wish I was.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Explain.""

Dr. Vale looked around the coffee shop.

"Not here.""

I shook my head.

"No. I want answers now.""

My voice surprised even me.

For years, I had been the girl who stayed calm.

The girl who smiled when people stared.

The girl who proved herself quietly.

But this wasn't a competition.

This was my life.

Dr. Vale sighed.

"Sarah Bennett was involved in the original investigation.""

My heart sank.

"Investigation?""

He nodded.

"After your birth records were changed, someone reported what happened.""

"Who?""

He looked at me.

"Your mother.""

I looked at my father.

Then at Dr. Vale.

"My mother tried to find the truth?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know that.""

Dr. Vale continued.

"Your mother was told the hospital made an error. She wanted answers. She wanted accountability.""

I swallowed.

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

"Because the investigation disappeared.""

The room felt colder.

"Disappeared?""

Dr. Vale nodded.

"Documents vanished. Witnesses stopped cooperating. People who were involved suddenly changed their stories.""

Daniel clenched his jaw.

"And Sarah?""

Dr. Vale looked at him.

"Sarah was a young assistant working with the legal team at the time.""

My mind was spinning.

Coach Sarah wasn't just my coach.

She was connected to the beginning of my story.

"But why would she hide this from me?""

Dr. Vale looked away.

"That's the question you need to ask her.""

I left the coffee shop before anyone could stop me.

I didn't know where I was going.

My feet just moved.

By the time I reached the gym, the sun was beginning to set.

The place was almost empty.

I walked inside.

The familiar smell of chalk and rubber floors surrounded me.

Normally, this place felt like home.

Now it felt like another place full of secrets.

Coach Sarah was in the training area.

She turned when she saw me.

"Maya?""

The smile on her face disappeared when she saw my expression.

"What happened?""

I stared at her.

"How long have you known?""

She froze.

"Known what?""

I hated that she asked.

Because it meant she already knew what I was talking about.

"Don't do that.""

Her face changed.

"Maya...""

"How long have you known about my birth records?""

Silence.

The silence was enough.

My chest hurt.

"Tell me.""

She sat down slowly.

"I was hoping you would never find out this way.""

The same words.

Again.

Everyone was protecting me.

Everyone was deciding what I could handle.

"Why?""

She looked at the floor.

"Because I saw what happened to your mother.""

"What happened?""

"She spent years fighting for answers. She lost money. Friends. Time.""

Coach Sarah's voice became softer.

"Then she made one decision.""

I waited.

"She wanted you to have a normal childhood.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Normal?""

I looked around the gym.

"Sarah, I spent my whole life being told I was different.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You knew the one thing I wanted was the truth.""

She looked at me.

"And I was afraid the truth would hurt you.""

I shook my head.

"The truth hurts more when everyone hides it.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"I know.""

For the first time, I saw Coach Sarah not as my coach.

Not as the person who always had the answers.

But as someone who had made a mistake.

"Did you change my records?""

Her eyes widened.

"No.""

The answer was immediate.

"Never.""

"Then what did you do?""

She looked away.

And that was when I knew.

There was something else.

"What?""

She whispered:

"I protected the person who did.""

My heart dropped.

"Who?""

Coach Sarah reached into her desk drawer.

She pulled out an old envelope.

"I kept this because I didn't know what else to do.""

She handed it to me.

The handwriting on the front was familiar.

My mother's.

But the name written underneath wasn't mine.

It was Sarah's.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my hands shake.

"Sarah, if anything happens to me, promise me you will protect Maya from him.""

I looked up.

"Him?""

Coach Sarah's face turned pale.

Then my phone rang.

It was my mother.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

"Maya.""

"Mom?""

"Come home.""

"What happened?""

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

"Your father found the missing file.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Which file?""

May you like

Her answer was barely audible.

"The file that proves who really changed your records.""
