Chapter 2: The Routine Nobody Expected

The silence lasted only a moment.

Then the crowd reacted.

A few people clapped.

Then more joined.

Within seconds, the entire gym was filled with applause.

I didn't look at Brittany.

I didn't look at anyone.

I focused on the next move.

The routine.

The one Coach Sarah and I had built piece by piece.

The one that started with a question:

"What if you stopped trying to copy everyone else?""

That question changed everything.

Most gymnasts trained their bodies to follow a traditional path.

I had to create my own.

I launched into my second sequence.

A twist.

A controlled jump.

A sharp landing exactly where I had practiced thousands of times.

My legs absorbed the impact.

My body stayed steady.

From the corner of my eye, I saw one of the judges lean forward.

That was when I knew they weren't watching because they felt sorry for me.

They were watching because they were impressed.

The music continued.

My breathing matched the rhythm.

Every movement carried nine years of effort.

Every jump carried every person who told me I couldn't.

Halfway through the routine, I heard a familiar voice from the crowd.

"Come on, Maya!""

My mother.

I smiled.

Just for a second.

Then I pushed harder.

The final section was approaching.

The part that scared me the most.

The standing back tuck.

Most people thought the hardest part of gymnastics was strength.

They were wrong.

The hardest part was trusting yourself when everyone else doubted you.

I remembered the first time I tried it.

I landed badly and rolled across the mat.

Coach Sarah rushed over.

"Are you okay?""

I laughed through the pain.

"I think so.""

She helped me sit up.

"Maya, you don't have to prove anything to anyone.""

I looked at her.

"Yes, I do.""

She shook her head.

"No. You have to prove something to yourself.""

Those words stayed with me.

Now, standing in that arena, I knew exactly what she meant.

I wasn't competing against Brittany.

I wasn't competing against the whispers.

I was competing against the voice inside my own head that sometimes wondered if they were right.

The music slowed.

The final pass began.

I ran.

I jumped.

My body rotated through the air.

For a fraction of a second, everything disappeared.

The crowd.

The judges.

The pressure.

Then my feet touched the floor.

Perfect landing.

The arena exploded.

I stood still, breathing heavily.

The first person I saw was my mother.

She was standing.

Crying.

Smiling.

Then I looked across the floor.

Brittany was staring at me.

But this time, there was no laughter.

No mocking smile.

Just shock.

Coach Sarah ran toward me.

"You did it.""

I smiled.

"I finally landed it.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I looked confused.

"You did something bigger.""

Before I could ask what she meant, the judges began speaking.

The announcer lifted the microphone.

"Before we announce Maya's score, there is something we need to address.""

The entire gym became quiet again.

I looked toward the judges' table.

One of them stood up holding a sheet of paper.

May you like

And the name written at the top wasn't mine.

It was Brittany's.
