Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Protected

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because of the message.

Because deep down, I knew there was still something missing.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that belonged to someone else.

At sunrise, I found my mother sitting in the kitchen.

She looked like she hadn't slept either.

For a moment, we just looked at each other.

Then she said:

"You got another message.""

It wasn't a question.

I sat down.

"How did you know?""

She looked away.

"Because I received one too.""

My heart dropped.

"What did it say?""

She hesitated.

Then she pulled out her phone.

The message was from the same number.

*Tell her the truth before someone else does.*

I stared at the screen.

"What truth?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"The reason your father left.""

I felt the old anger return.

"I thought he left because he couldn't accept me.""

She shook her head.

"That was only part of it.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

She reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a letter.

Old.

Folded.

The handwriting looked familiar.

Daniel's.

"He wrote this the night he left.""

I looked at the envelope.

"Why didn't you give it to me?""

"Because I was angry.""

The honesty surprised me.

She looked down.

"I thought he abandoned us.""

She opened the letter.

Inside were only a few paragraphs.

I read the first line.

*Emma, I know you will hate me for this.*

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

I continued.

*But if I stay, they will use Maya to silence us.*

I stopped.

"What?""

My mother whispered:

"He found out the hospital wasn't just hiding a mistake.""

I looked at her.

"They were trying to protect a company.""

My eyes widened.

"A company?""

She nodded.

"The treatment program was funded by a medical company. They didn't want lawsuits. They didn't want their name connected to what happened.""

I looked at the letter again.

Daniel continued:

*They offered me money to stay quiet. I refused. Then they threatened us.*

My hands went cold.

"Threatened?""

My mother nodded.

"They told us if we kept fighting, they would make our lives impossible.""

"Then why did Dad leave?""

She looked at me.

"Because he thought leaving would protect us.""

I felt tears forming.

"He thought disappearing was protecting us?""

"He was wrong.""

The answer came quietly.

"But he was scared.""

For years, I had carried anger toward a man who left.

Now I didn't know what to feel.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone looked up.

Daniel stood outside.

My mother opened it.

He saw the letter.

Then looked at me.

"You know.""

I nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

His face fell.

"Because I thought you would hate me less if you never knew I was afraid.""

I looked at him.

"Do you know what hurt the most?""

He stayed silent.

"Not that you left.""

His eyes filled.

"It was thinking you left because of me.""

Daniel wiped his face.

"I was wrong.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

The word hurt him.

But it was true.

Then he said something I never expected.

"There is one more person who needs to answer for what happened.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

He looked toward the window.

"The person who sent those messages.""

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

A photo of me.

Taken that morning.

Outside my house.

My blood ran cold.

The message underneath said:

*Stop digging into the past, Maya.*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*Or the people you love will pay for it.*
