Chapter 9: The Man From My Father’s Past
The name appeared beneath the message.
Thomas Reed.
My father’s former assistant.
The man who had worked beside him for twelve years.
The man who knew every schedule.
Every meeting.
Every secret.
I stopped walking.
Michael noticed.
“What is it?””
I showed him the phone.
His expression changed instantly.
“Thomas.””
“You know him?””
“Of course.””
Michael looked toward the exit.
“He was one of your father’s most trusted employees.””
“Was?””
Michael didn’t answer.
That was enough.
We pushed through the crowd outside.
Thomas was gone.
The parking lot was nearly empty.
Only a few cars remained.
The wedding was still happening behind us.
But my life had already ended in that room.
The man I married was a stranger.
The people I trusted were hiding things.
And now someone from my father’s past was sending me messages.
Michael called security.
“Check the cameras.””
Within minutes, one of the venue employees returned.
“Sir, the man left through the east entrance.””
“Did he take anything?””
The employee hesitated.
“A small box.””
My stomach dropped.
“The gift box?””
He nodded.
I looked at Michael.
“Why would Thomas take that?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
Whatever was inside that box mattered.
More than we understood.
We returned inside.
Vanessa was waiting.
Her face was pale.
“Daniel.””
I ignored her.
“Where is Robert?””
She looked surprised.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s convenient.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think I’m involved with this?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
That hurt her.
I could see it.
But I didn’t apologize.
Because I had spent too much time protecting her feelings.
While she protected her secrets.
My mother sat at a nearby table.
She looked exhausted.
I walked over.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
I sat beside her.
“You don’t have to apologize.””
“Yes, I do.””
Her voice trembled.
“Your father wanted to tell you.””
“Why didn’t he?””
“Because he loved you.””
I looked at her.
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
She touched my hand.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked toward Vanessa.
“Of you losing the life you built.””
That hurt.
Because my father had known.
He had known something was wrong.
And he still let me choose.
He trusted me enough to make my own mistake.
Michael joined us.
“We need to talk somewhere private.””
We moved into a smaller room near the back of the venue.
Michael closed the door.
Then he placed a folder on the table.
“This was found after your father died.””
I opened it.
Inside were notes.
Handwritten investigations.
Dates.
Names.
My father had been tracking everything.
Not just Robert.
Not just Vanessa.
Everyone.
“Why didn’t you show me this?””
Michael looked down.
“Because your father instructed me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He said if you ever discovered the truth, I should give you everything at once.””
My fingers moved across the pages.
One sentence caught my attention.
I read it aloud.
“Trust no one who benefits from your silence.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Michael hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
He took a breath.
“Your father believed someone inside your family was leaking information.””
My heart sank.
“Inside my family?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was standing outside the room.
Watching us.
I immediately felt guilty.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“You don’t know that.””
“Yes, I do.””
Ethan had made mistakes.
But he had also warned me.
He had exposed Vanessa.
He had risked his relationship with me.
Michael nodded slowly.
“Your father suspected someone else.””
“Who?””
Before he could answer, the door opened.
Vanessa walked in.
“I know who.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
“What are you talking about?”” I asked.
She looked at the documents.
Then at me.
“I didn’t tell you because I thought I could fix it.””
My heart sank.
“Fix what?””
She whispered:
“Your father’s investigation.””
Silence.
She continued.
“Daniel, before we met, I was contacted by someone.””
“Who?””
She looked down.
“The person who told me about your family.””
My voice became quiet.
“Who?””
Her eyes lifted.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
“Your father’s lawyer.””
Michael froze.
I looked at him.
“What?””
May you like
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“He was the one who introduced me to Robert.””
