Chapter 12: The Truth Behind the Betrayal
We froze.
The hidden room suddenly felt smaller.
Darker.
The sound above us came again.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was searching.
Michael turned off the light.
Nobody spoke.
We waited.
My heartbeat was so loud I thought whoever was upstairs could hear it.
Ethan whispered:
“Who else knew we were coming?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa looked at me.
Her face changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“I didn’t tell anyone.””
I believed her.
Not because I trusted her.
Because the fear in her eyes was real.
Michael motioned toward the staircase.
We quietly moved upward.
Ethan stayed behind me.
My hand gripped the old flashlight from the shelf.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice called:
“Daniel.””
I froze.
I knew that voice.
“Robert.””
He stepped into the room.
Alone.
Hands visible.
“I need to talk to you.””
I laughed quietly.
“After everything?””
His expression was exhausted.
Not confident.
Not arrogant.
Exhausted.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
He looked at Michael.
“Did you tell him?””
Michael didn’t respond.
Robert sighed.
“I knew you would eventually find out.””
“Find out what?””
He looked at the hidden staircase.
Then at me.
“That your father was right.””
The words shocked everyone.
“About what?””
Robert sat down slowly.
“About me.””
Nobody moved.
I stared.
“You’re admitting it?””
“I’m admitting I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I stepped closer.
“You stole from my family.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I protected your family.””
I almost laughed.
“By lying?””
“By hiding the truth.””
“From me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Robert looked at Michael.
Then back at me.
“Because the person your father feared wasn’t me.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Michael.
Again.
Robert continued.
“Your father discovered someone had been manipulating everyone.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
He looked at Michael.
And Michael closed his eyes.
That was the moment.
The moment everything changed.
“Michael.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“Daniel, listen.””
But I stepped back.
“No.””
Robert stood.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I stared at Michael.
The man who had guided me through my father’s death.
The man who had controlled every piece of information.
The man who always seemed to know just enough.
“How long?””
Michael looked broken.
“Daniel…”
“How long were you hiding this?””
He swallowed.
“Years.””
The word destroyed me.
My mother covered her mouth.
Ethan whispered:
“No…”
Michael looked at me.
“Your father discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“That the person draining the family assets wasn’t Robert.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Then who?””
Michael looked down.
“Me.””
Nobody moved.
The room became silent.
Even Robert looked away.
I felt like the ground had disappeared beneath me.
“You?””
Michael nodded.
“I was supposed to protect your father’s legacy.””
His voice cracked.
“And I failed.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He stepped forward.
“I can explain.””
I backed away.
“Everyone explains.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone lies first.””
Michael looked devastated.
Then he reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small envelope.
And placed it on the table.
“This is why your father never confronted me.””
I stared.
“What is it?””
Michael looked at the envelope.
“The last thing he wrote before he died.””
I didn’t move.
“Why would he leave you that?””
Michael’s eyes met mine.
“Because your father knew something worse.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What?””
Michael whispered:
“He knew I wasn’t acting alone.””
At that exact moment, the lights in the lake house went out.
And from upstairs, someone whispered my name.
“Daniel.””
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made my blood freeze.
May you like
My mother’s voice.
But my mother was standing right beside me.
