The Gift She Threw Away / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Voice I Could Never Forget

The recording ended.

But Vanessa’s words stayed.

I don’t care what happens to Daniel.

Those seven words were louder than the music from the reception.

Louder than the conversations of the guests outside.

Louder than every promise she had ever whispered to me.

I stared at my phone screen.

The recording was only thirty-two seconds long.

Thirty-two seconds that destroyed months of memories.

Vanessa stepped toward me.

“Daniel.””

I moved back.

The reaction was automatic.

And when I saw the hurt flash across her face, a small part of me felt guilty.

But then I remembered my mother falling.

I remembered the box breaking.

I remembered my father’s warning.

“Don’t.””

My voice came out colder than I expected.

She stopped.

“Please let me explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Explain what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The recording.””

“Which part?””

She looked confused.

“The whole thing.””

I held up my phone.

“Did you say those words?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

A denial would have come immediately from someone innocent.

A person who was falsely accused would have been angry.

Instead, Vanessa looked trapped.

“I was upset.””

I stared at her.

“That’s your explanation?””

“No, you don’t understand the context.””

“Then give me the context.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Robert stepped forward.

“Daniel, this isn’t the place.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to tell me what is and isn’t the place.””

His expression hardened.

“You’re emotional.””

“My wife was recorded saying she doesn’t care what happens to me.””

“She didn’t mean it literally.””

I looked at him.

“And you know that how?””

He didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

The truth kept appearing in the spaces where people refused to speak.

Michael quietly took my phone.

“I want to verify the recording.””

I nodded.

“Do it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You believe him?””

Michael looked at her.

“I believe evidence.””

The words cut deeper because they were true.

My mother had been standing quietly the entire time.

I finally looked at her.

“Mom.””

She wiped her face.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

The garden suddenly felt colder.

“What did you know?””

She looked down.

“Your father had doubts.””

“About Vanessa?””

She nodded slowly.

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“Before the engagement.””

I stared at her.

“Before?””

She reached for my hand.

“Richard wanted to be wrong.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because I understood.

My father had not been trying to control my life.

He had been trying to protect it.

“What did Dad find?””

My mother looked toward Michael.

He answered.

“Your father discovered unusual communication between Robert and Vanessa.””

I looked at Robert.

His face remained calm.

Too calm.

“How unusual?””

Michael hesitated.

“Frequent messages.””

“About business?””

“No.””

The single word landed heavily.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She wiped away tears.

“You’re making me sound like a monster.””

I almost smiled.

“Did I make the recording?””

“No.””

“Did I make you say those things?””

“No.””

“Then don’t blame me for hearing them.””

She looked away.

For the first time, she had no argument.

Michael’s phone suddenly rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone noticed.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He stepped away briefly.

Then returned.

“We have a problem.””

My stomach tightened.

“What problem?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“Someone attempted to access the Carter family trust account tonight.””

My blood ran cold.

“Tonight?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked down at his phone.

Then back at me.

“The request came from a device registered under Vanessa’s name.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Michael showed her the information.

Her face went pale.

“I didn’t do that.””

“Then who did?””

She looked at Robert.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

And so did everyone else.

Robert noticed.

His expression changed.

“Don’t look at me.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“I didn’t say anything.””

“No, but you thought it.””

The two of them stared at each other.

And suddenly I understood.

They weren’t standing together.

They were afraid of each other.

Michael gathered the documents.

“Daniel, we need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because whoever sent that recording wanted you to discover the truth tonight.””

He looked toward the wedding hall.

“And whoever tried to access the trust wants something else.””

“What?””

Michael’s eyes met mine.

“They want you to make a mistake.””

Before I could respond, another message appeared on my phone.

This time, it was from the same unknown number.

One sentence.

My hands went cold.

Because it wasn’t a warning.

May you like

It was a confession.

“Ask your brother why he deleted the first recording.””
