The Gift She Threw Away / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Last Piece of the Puzzle

I called Vanessa immediately.

She answered before the first ring ended.

“Daniel.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“Where are you?””

“At the hotel.””

“Why?””

“Because I left.””

I closed my eyes.

For some reason, hearing that hurt.

Not because I wanted her there.

Because it reminded me how close we had been only hours earlier.

“What proof do you have?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Your father’s final investigation.””

I looked around the room.

Everyone was watching me.

“Where did you get it?””

“From Robert.””

The room went silent.

Robert’s face changed.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“He contacted me before the wedding.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

“He wanted me to help him find the documents your father hid.””

“And you agreed.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I was angry.””

I didn’t speak.

“My family lost everything years ago.””

I listened.

“My mother spent her entire life blaming your father.””

I looked at the photograph.

Vanessa’s mother.

“The woman in the picture.””

Vanessa went quiet.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“What was her connection to my father?””

“She worked for him.””

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa said the words that changed everything.

“She was your father’s first accountant.””

Michael closed his eyes.

Robert looked away.

I understood.

The betrayal started long before I met Vanessa.

“What happened?””

Vanessa answered quietly.

“She discovered someone was stealing money from your father’s company.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why blame my father?””

“Because someone made it look like he was responsible.””

The pieces started connecting.

Someone had been hiding behind everyone else.

Using Robert.

Using Vanessa.

Using Michael.

Using my family’s trust.

“Where is the proof?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“I need you to understand something.””

“I’m listening.””

“I didn’t marry you only because of the investigation.””

I closed my eyes.

Not now.

Not another confession.

“I did fall in love with you.””

I didn’t answer.

“Even after I found out about the money. Even after I knew about your family. I was confused. I was wrong.””

Her voice cracked.

“But my feelings were real.””

I looked at my mother.

At Ethan.

At the damage left behind.

“I don’t know if that matters anymore.””

“I know.””

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

“The proof is in the box.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

“The gift box.””

I looked at Michael.

“The document.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice became urgent.

“Not the document.””

“Then what?””

“The bottom.””

I remembered the box.

The ribbon.

The broken lid.

The hidden compartment.

My father had designed everything carefully.

“What’s inside?””

“The truth.””

I ended the call.

Everyone looked at me.

I turned to Michael.

“The box.””

He understood.

“We need to find Thomas.””

But before we could move, the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

Thomas Reed stood there.

Holding the cream-colored box.

Nobody spoke.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

He placed the box on the table.

“I’m sorry.””

Robert stepped forward.

“You stole it.””

Thomas looked at him.

“I protected it.””

Michael’s face went pale.

“Thomas…”

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father knew.””

“Knew what?””

He took a deep breath.

“He knew the betrayal was coming.””

My hands tightened.

“Who betrayed him?””

Thomas looked at Michael.

Then Robert.

Then finally me.

“The person who killed your father’s trust.””

Nobody moved.

Thomas opened the box.

Removed the damaged ribbon.

Pressed his thumb against the bottom.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a small memory card.

My heart raced.

Thomas handed it to me.

“Your father recorded this three days before he died.””

Michael whispered:

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.””

We found an old laptop in the study.

The video loaded.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“Daniel,” he said.

My eyes filled instantly.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to stop them.””

The room became silent.

My father continued.

“I need you to know something.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“The person responsible is not the person you suspect.””

A pause.

Then his final words appeared.

“The person who betrayed me is someone who has spent years pretending to protect my family.””

Everyone looked at Michael.

But my father wasn’t finished.

He said one more thing.

And the entire room went silent.

“Michael is innocent.””

May you like

My breath stopped.

Then my father revealed the name of the real traitor.
