The Gift She Threw Away / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Messages

The person walking toward us wasn’t a stranger.

That was the worst part.

If it had been a stranger, maybe things would have been easier.

Maybe I could have hated him immediately.

But I knew him.

Everyone in my family knew him.

Robert Hale.

My father’s former business partner.

The man who stood beside my father in every company photograph.

The man who attended my father’s funeral and told me, “If you ever need anything, I’m family.””

I remembered those words.

Now they felt like a joke.

Robert stopped a few feet away.

“Daniel.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew he was here?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

Robert looked between us.

“I can explain.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“That’s what everyone says right before they make excuses.””

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“Your brother is emotional.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Act like I’m the problem.””

Robert looked at him.

“You’ve always been dramatic.””

The comment made Ethan’s face change.

And suddenly, I understood something.

There was history here.

A history I didn’t know about.

I looked at Robert.

“What do you have to do with Vanessa?””

Silence.

That silence was enough.

Robert looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was louder now.

“I asked you a question.””

Before he could answer, Vanessa appeared behind him.

She had followed me.

Of course she had.

She looked from Robert to me.

Then she froze.

Not because she was surprised.

Because she knew exactly what this looked like.

“Daniel.””

Her voice softened.

“Please don’t do this here.””

I stared at her.

“Do what?””

She stepped closer.

“Destroy everything because you’re angry.””

“Destroy everything?””

I held up my phone.

“Is that what you think is happening?””

Her eyes moved to the screen.

For the first time, real fear crossed her face.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You went through my messages?””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“That’s your concern?””

She looked at Robert.

Then back at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Nobody spoke.

The garden suddenly felt too quiet.

Finally, Vanessa sighed.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“After the wedding.””

My stomach dropped.

“After the wedding?””

She nodded slowly.

“I didn’t want to ruin today.””

I looked around at the decorations.

At the flowers.

At the guests.

At the life I thought I was starting.

“You mean you didn’t want to ruin your chance.””

Her face hardened.

“That’s unfair.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“What’s unfair is my mother standing there with a gift from my dead father while you humiliate her because your friends were watching.””

Vanessa flinched.

Good.

For the first time, she looked like she understood what she had done.

But then Robert spoke.

“Enough.””

I turned.

“Excuse me?””

“You’re making accusations without knowing the full story.””

I stepped toward him.

“Then tell me the full story.””

Robert said nothing.

That was his mistake.

Because silence was an answer too.

Ethan walked beside me.

“Daniel, there’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What more?””

He hesitated.

Then handed me another folder.

“I found this in Dad’s old office.””

My heart stopped.

“Why were you in Dad’s office?””

“Because after he died, I found something strange.””

“What?””

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside were copies of financial records.

Bank transfers.

Contracts.

Emails.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw Vanessa’s name.

I stopped breathing.

“What is this?””

Ethan looked at me sadly.

“Your father was investigating them.””

“Investigating who?””

Ethan looked at Robert.

Then Vanessa.

“Both of them.””

The world seemed to tilt.

My wife.

My father’s business partner.

Together.

But I still needed proof.

I still needed to understand.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.””

I looked at her.

“Then tell me why my father was investigating you.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

Then Michael’s voice came from behind us.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

The attorney was standing there holding another document.

His expression was serious.

“I think you should see this before you make any decisions.””

“What is it?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then at Robert.

“It’s the reason your father created the trust in the first place.””

My heart pounded.

“Tell me.””

Michael handed me the paper.

And the first line made my blood run cold.

It wasn’t about protecting the lake house.

It wasn’t about money.

It was a warning.

May you like

A warning my father wrote months before he died.

A warning about a betrayal inside our own family.
