Chapter 9: The Sister He Never Mentioned
I spent the next hour trying to convince myself there was a reasonable explanation.
People lie.
People hide things.
People have complicated families.
But Michael?
My Michael?
The man who told me everything?
The man who cried when our daughter was born?
The man who once apologized to a waiter because he thought he sounded impatient?
He had a sister.
And he never told me.
That hurt more than I expected.
Emily sat beside me in the airport waiting area, drawing circles on a piece of paper.
She noticed my silence.
“Are you mad at Daddy?””
The question caught me off guard.
“No.””
“Then why do you look sad?””
I looked at her.
Because children notice everything.
“I just found out your dad kept something from me.””
She nodded.
“Maybe he was scared.””
Those words stopped me.
Because they sounded exactly like something Michael would have said.
A few minutes later, a woman approached.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Her eyes were red.
And the moment she saw Emily, she stopped.
Like she was seeing someone she had lost.
“Emily?””
My body immediately reacted.
I stood.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at me.
“I’m Claire.””
The woman from the phone.
Michael’s supposed sister.
Security was nearby.
I should have walked away.
But something about her face made me hesitate.
She looked like Michael.
Not exactly.
But the same eyes.
The same sadness.
“How can I believe you?””
Claire reached into her bag.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out a photograph.
She handed it to me.
It was old.
A young Michael stood beside a little girl.
The girl couldn’t have been more than ten.
On the back, in Michael’s handwriting:
*My little sister Claire. I promise I’ll always protect you.*
I stared at it.
Emily looked at the photo.
“She looks like Daddy.””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“He was my best friend.””
I lowered the picture.
“Why didn’t he tell me about you?””
Claire looked away.
“Because he thought keeping me hidden would keep you safe.””
“From who?””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me more.
“What did Michael find?””
Claire looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
“The company that investigated Flight 417 wasn’t covering up an accident.””
“What were they covering up?””
She looked directly at me.
“A murder.””
My breath caught.
“Whose?””
Claire’s face hardened.
“Someone who knew too much.””
I looked at Emily.
“Michael?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“The victim was supposed to be me.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Claire sat down.
“Years ago, I discovered financial records showing the company was hiding safety failures. I tried to report it.””
“And?””
“They destroyed my reputation. Made everyone think I was unstable.””
My stomach turned.
“Michael knew?””
“Yes.””
Claire looked at Emily.
“He spent years trying to clear my name.””
I felt something crack inside.
Because suddenly Michael’s secrets made sense.
He wasn’t hiding a betrayal.
He was hiding a battle.
A battle he thought he could fight alone.
“Then why did he die?””
Claire looked down.
“Because he found the final piece of evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She looked at the flash drive.
“The evidence proving who ordered everything.””
I held it tighter.
“Who?””
Claire’s eyes moved toward the airport entrance.
And her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
I turned.
Standing across the terminal was Richard Vale.
But he wasn’t alone.
A man in a security uniform stood beside him.
Claire whispered:
“That’s him.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“The person Michael was trying to expose.””
The man turned.
And even from across the airport, I recognized him.
Because I had seen his face before.
Not in person.
On my husband’s memorial program.
Under the list of people who gave speeches at his funeral.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Mrs. Brooks…”
Her voice shook.
“You need to know something.””
“What?””
She looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“Michael didn’t die because he discovered the truth.””
A pause.
“He died because he discovered who was helping hide it.””
I felt frozen.
“Who?””
Claire whispered the name.
May you like
And it was the one person I never expected.
“Your husband’s closest friend.””
