Chapter 8: The File Hidden in Plain Sight

The moment we landed, security surrounded the aircraft.

Passengers complained.

Phones came out.

People whispered.

But I barely noticed any of it.

My entire focus was on Emily.

She held my hand tightly as officers walked through the cabin.

The same cabin where, only hours earlier, a stranger had stolen her seat and humiliated her.

Now that same stranger had become the center of a mystery involving her father’s death.

Captain Harris stayed beside us.

“I’m going to make sure you both get home safely.””

I looked at him.

“Are you still protecting us?””

His expression hurt.

“Yes.””

“Even if I don’t know whether I can trust you?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

Most people would have defended themselves.

He didn’t.

A security officer approached.

“Captain Harris?””

“Yes?””

“We need to ask you about Mr. Vale.””

Captain Harris nodded.

Before leaving, he looked at Emily.

“Your father would be proud of you.””

Emily looked down.

“I’m scared.””

The captain softened.

“Being scared doesn’t mean you’re not brave.””

She looked at the wings on her backpack.

“Daddy said that.””

“I know.””

The officer led him away.

And suddenly, for the first time all day, I was alone with my thoughts.

I opened Michael’s flash drive again.

The video still stopped at the same place.

The final sentence.

*The person they were protecting was…*

I replayed it.

Nothing.

Then Emily touched my arm.

“Mom.””

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

“Wait.””

I paused.

“What?””

“When Daddy was talking…”

She leaned closer.

“There was something behind him.””

I zoomed in.

The video quality wasn’t perfect.

But behind Michael, sitting on a shelf, was a small framed photograph.

I stared.

“Do you recognize it?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

I looked harder.

Then I saw it.

A reflection.

Someone standing behind the camera.

Someone recording him.

“Michael didn’t record this alone.””

Emily whispered:

“Who was there?””

I didn’t know.

But then I noticed something else.

A tiny object on the desk.

A company ID badge.

I zoomed in.

The name was blurry.

But the logo was clear.

A black bird.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

“You need to stop looking.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

“You don’t understand what Michael found.””

“Then explain it.””

A shaky breath came through the phone.

“I tried to warn him.””

My heart jumped.

“You knew my husband?””

“Yes.””

“Who are you?””

Another pause.

Then:

“My name is Claire.””

I looked at Emily.

“Claire who?””

The woman whispered:

“Claire Brooks.””

My blood ran cold.

“No.””

Emily looked confused.

“What?””

The woman continued.

“I’m Michael’s sister.””

I froze.

Because that was impossible.

Michael had never mentioned having a sister.

Not once.

The woman spoke again.

“He didn’t tell you because he was trying to protect you.””

My voice shook.

“Protect me from what?””

A pause.

Then she answered.

“From the truth about who your husband really was.””

The call ended.

I stood there, unable to move.

Emily looked at me.

“Mom?””

I stared at the phone.

My husband had secrets.

The captain had secrets.

And now a woman claiming to be Michael’s sister had appeared.

May you like

A woman I had never heard of.

A woman who knew exactly where to find us.
