Chapter 6: The Recording Michael Hid
I didn’t speak to Captain Harris for the rest of the flight.
Not because I believed Richard Vale.
Because I didn’t know what to believe.
And that was somehow worse.
The man who had comforted my daughter.
The man who had spoken about Michael like a brother.
The man holding my husband’s final secret.
Now had a shadow over him.
Captain Harris sat across from us.
He didn’t defend himself.
That bothered me.
“Say something,” I finally whispered.
Emily was asleep against the window, exhausted from everything she had heard.
Captain Harris looked at her.
Then back at me.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
He nodded slowly.
“I should have told you everything eight months ago.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
The confession surprised me.
“Of what?””
He looked at the flash drive.
“Of what would happen if Michael was wrong.””
I stared at him.
“And if he was right?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Then I was afraid of what would happen to Emily.””
My anger softened for only a second.
Then I remembered the note.
Michael trusted him.
Or warned us about him.
I plugged the flash drive into my phone using an adapter from my bag.
One file appeared.
*FINAL_MESSAGE.mp4*
My breathing stopped.
Captain Harris saw it.
“He recorded something.””
I pressed play.
The screen showed Michael.
My husband.
Alive.
Sitting in his pilot uniform.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Emily woke up instantly.
“Daddy?””
She reached for the phone.
Michael looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
But smiling.
“Hey, Em.””
My daughter covered her mouth.
“If you’re watching this, it means I wasn’t able to tell you myself.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“I’m sorry.””
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
His expression changed.
The warmth disappeared.
“Someone inside the investigation is hiding the truth about Flight 417.””
Captain Harris looked away.
Michael continued.
“I trusted one person to help me find the evidence.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“Daniel.””
My eyes moved to Captain Harris.
He looked shocked.
Michael continued.
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, I need you to know I never blamed you.””
Captain Harris froze.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“You tried to stop me from going alone. You warned me.””
My heart raced.
Michael looked down briefly.
“But there is one thing you don’t know.””
The cabin suddenly felt too quiet.
Michael leaned closer to the camera.
“The person who changed the report wasn’t working against us.””
A pause.
“They were trying to protect someone.””
Captain Harris whispered:
“No…”
Michael’s voice continued.
“And the person they were protecting was…”
The video suddenly glitched.
The screen went black.
Emily stared.
“Mom?””
I tapped the phone.
Nothing.
The file had stopped.
Captain Harris stood suddenly.
“Wait.””
He looked toward the cockpit.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
Because a message had appeared on my phone.
A new one.
From an unknown number.
May you like
Only one sentence.
*You’re closer than you realize. Ask your daughter what she saw that night.*
