Chapter 11: The Letter Michael Never Sent
We didn’t open the letter at the airport.
Not there.
Not with strangers walking around us.
Not with cameras watching.
Not while Richard Vale and Thomas Reed were somewhere nearby.
Claire found us a quiet room inside the airport security area.
The door closed.
For the first time all day, we were alone.
I placed the envelope on the table.
Emily stared at it.
“Is Daddy going to tell me something bad?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
“How do you know?””
I didn’t.
That was the hardest truth.
“I don’t.””
Emily looked down.
“But I want to know anyway.””
She was eleven years old.
And somehow she was braver than most adults I knew.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Michael’s handwriting.
My hands shook before I even read the first line.
*My beautiful Emily,*
I had to stop.
The tears came immediately.
Emily touched my arm.
“Keep going.””
So I did.
*If you are reading this, it means life changed in a way I hoped it never would.*
*I need you to know something. Your mother is the strongest person I have ever known. She will try to carry every piece of pain herself. Don’t let her.*
I looked away.
Because even from beyond the grave, Michael knew me.
*There are things I kept from both of you. Not because I didn’t trust you. Because I trusted you too much.*
My breath caught.
*The world is not always kind to people who tell the truth.*
The next sentence made my entire body freeze.
*Thomas Reed was the first person I suspected.*
I looked at Claire.
She nodded.
I continued.
*But I was wrong about one thing.*
My eyes moved across the page.
*Thomas was not working alone.*
Emily leaned closer.
“Who else?””
I read the next line.
Then stopped.
Because I couldn’t understand it.
*The person closest to me was the one I never considered.*
Claire looked worried.
“What?””
I turned the paper.
The next words were written darker, like Michael had pressed the pen harder.
*Daniel knows who it is.*
The room went silent.
“Daniel?””
Emily looked confused.
“But Captain Harris helped us.””
Claire looked at the letter.
I did.
*If Daniel is with you, trust him. But do not trust everything he tells you.*
My chest tightened.
A contradiction.
A warning.
Michael trusted him.
But not completely.
The final lines were the worst.
*Emily, if someone tells you I made a mistake, remember this. I never made the mistake they claimed.*
*I chose to save people.*
*That was never wrong.*
At the bottom was one final sentence.
*The person who caused this will try to convince you they were protecting you.*
The door suddenly opened.
Captain Harris walked in.
His face changed when he saw the letter.
“You found it.””
I stood.
“You knew.””
His expression fell.
“Knew what?””
“That Michael suspected you.””
Silence.
Captain Harris looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
“I knew he was worried.””
“You knew who he suspected?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Daniel.””
His eyes closed.
“I didn’t betray him.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
He looked exhausted.
“I made one mistake.””
The words were exactly what Michael warned us about.
I stepped back.
“What mistake?””
Captain Harris looked at Emily.
And whispered:
“I helped Michael find the evidence.””
A pause.
“But I also helped someone else destroy it.””
Emily gasped.
“Who?””
Captain Harris looked toward the closed door.
And said:
“Your father’s wife.””
My blood froze.
“My wife?””
He looked at me.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Michael’s first wife.””
I couldn’t speak.
May you like
Because I knew Michael’s entire life.
Or I thought I did.
