Chapter 3: The Secret in the Cockpit

The first thing I did after reading Michael’s note was look toward the cockpit door.

The second thing I did was wonder how long my husband had been afraid.

Michael was not a fearful man.

He faced storms at thirty thousand feet.

He handled emergencies while hundreds of people trusted him with their lives.

But before he died, he wrote a note telling us not to trust someone.

Someone who claimed he made a mistake.

I folded the paper carefully.

“Mom?””

I looked at Emily.

“Yes?””

“Are we in danger?””

The question broke something inside me.

“No.””

I reached across the aisle and held her hand.

“You’re with me. You’re safe.””

She nodded.

But she didn’t look convinced.

A few minutes later, Captain Harris returned from the cockpit.

His expression changed when he saw my face.

He knew.

“Where did you get that?””

I held up the note.

“Michael left it for us.””

The captain stopped walking.

The cabin noise faded around us.

“Emily had this the whole time?””

I nodded.

“She found it after the funeral.””

Captain Harris sat down.

His hands were trembling.

I had never seen a pilot shake before.

“What did Michael tell you?”” I asked.

He looked toward the cockpit.

Then at Emily.

Then finally at me.

“He was investigating something.””

“What?””

“A safety report.””

I frowned.

“About Flight 417?””

He nodded.

“The official report said the failure was caused by mechanical issues.””

“And?””

Captain Harris swallowed.

“And Michael didn’t believe it.””

Emily leaned closer.

“Daddy thought someone lied?””

Captain Harris looked at her.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“Who?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

“I was going to give this to you after the flight.””

My heart stopped.

“What is it?””

“Something Michael asked me to protect.””

I stared at the envelope.

“You had this for eight months?””

Captain Harris looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you contact me?””

His eyes lowered.

“Because Michael made me promise.””

“What promise?””

His voice became quiet.

“That if anything happened to him, I would only give this to the person who carried his wings.””

Emily touched the pin on her backpack.

“Me?””

Captain Harris nodded.

“Your father believed you were the only person he could trust completely.””

Emily looked overwhelmed.

She was eleven years old.

She should have been worrying about homework and birthday parties.

Not secrets left behind by her father.

I took the envelope.

Before I opened it, the man from seat 2A suddenly appeared near our row.

The same expensive suit.

The same cold expression.

The same confidence.

“What a touching reunion.””

Captain Harris stood immediately.

“How did you get back here?””

The man smiled.

“I know people.””

My stomach tightened.

The captain’s voice hardened.

“You need to return to your seat.””

The man ignored him.

His eyes moved to the envelope in my hand.

Then to Emily.

“You really shouldn’t open that.””

I froze.

“How do you know what’s inside?””

He smiled.

And this time, there was no pretending.

“I know exactly what your husband left behind.””

Captain Harris stepped between us.

“Leave now.””

The man laughed softly.

“Still protecting him after all these years, Daniel?””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Mom…”

The man looked at her.

“Your father wasn’t the hero everyone thinks he was.””

The words hit the cabin like a slap.

Captain Harris moved forward.

“Don’t you dare.””

The man walked away slowly.

But before he disappeared, he turned back.

“He never told you, did he?””

I felt my blood run cold.

“Told me what?””

The man smiled.

“The reason he died.””

The cabin door closed behind him.

And in my hand, Michael’s envelope suddenly felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Because I realized the truth.

My husband’s death had never been the ending.

It was the beginning.
