Chapter 9: The Man Who Came Back From the Past
Nobody moved after my father said the name.
Daniel.
The name that had haunted every conversation.
The name that had followed me since the moment I discovered my life wasn’t what I thought.
My father held the phone tightly.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then his expression hardened.
“You don’t get to call this house.””
I watched him.
The anger in his voice was real.
But so was the fear.
Finally, my father handed me the phone.
I stared at it.
“Me?””
He nodded.
“He wants to talk to you.””
My hand shook as I took it.
I lifted the phone.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then a man spoke.
“Emily.””
Hearing my name from a stranger felt wrong.
“You know who I am.””
A quiet laugh.
“I’ve known who you are since the day you were born.””
My heart pounded.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because you deserve the truth.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone had said those exact words tonight.
But nobody had actually given me the whole truth.
“What truth?””
The man sighed.
“Your father told you I abandoned you.””
I looked at Robert.
“He said you tried to take me.””
A pause.
Then Daniel answered:
“I tried to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because everyone believes their own version.””
My grip tightened.
“What happened to my mother?””
Silence.
A long one.
Then Daniel said:
“She was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””
I looked at Patricia.
“What truth?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Your mother discovered someone close to her had been lying.””
My father stepped closer.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel heard.
“Robert is there, isn’t he?””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
“Because he’s always been there.””
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
“Emily, ask him about the night your mother died.””
I looked at my father.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“Ask him why he was the last person to see her alive.””
My breath caught.
The room went silent.
Even Patricia looked shocked.
I lowered the phone.
“Is that true?””
My father looked at me.
“Emily…”
“Is it true?””
His silence was answer enough.
I stepped back.
“No.””
He reached for me.
“Please.””
I moved away.
“How could you never tell me?””
“I didn’t want you to remember that night.””
“What happened?””
He looked broken.
“Your mother and I argued.””
“About what?””
He swallowed.
“About Daniel.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“She wanted to tell you everything someday.””
“And you didn’t?””
“No.””
“Why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at the floor.
“Losing you.””
The room became quiet.
For the first time, I saw something other than guilt.
I saw a man who had been terrified.
But fear didn’t erase secrets.
And it didn’t erase pain.
The phone was still in my hand.
Daniel spoke again.
“Emily.””
I listened.
“Your father loves you.””
I looked up.
“But love doesn’t mean someone is innocent.””
My stomach twisted.
“Why should I believe you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
The answer surprised me.
“Then what do you want?””
“I want you to find the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The evidence your mother hid before she died.””
I looked at the letter.
“What evidence?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The proof of who caused the accident.””
Nobody breathed.
My father whispered:
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Your mother wasn’t just investigating her past.””
A pause.
“She was investigating someone in your present.””
My fingers went numb.
“Who?””
Daniel answered with one sentence.
May you like
And it destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
“The person who hurt your mother is still living in that house with you.””
